i went to store24 this morning to buy the august T pass, and when i turned around to pluck a golden ring of pastry perfection from the krispy kreme donut case, i found that IT WAS GONE!

"no, it can't be," i thought, "who would dare remove the krispy kremes?!?! who would want this profane action brought about?? surely it must have relocated to another part of the store!"

alas. it is truly gone.

the pain of my monthly expensive T pass will no longer be pacified by sweet honeyed loops of heaven.

rip krispy kreme display. i shall miss you.

The Krispy Kreme stores are pulling out of New England (the company is hosed financially). Alas, this may mean no donuts sold in grocery or convenience stores, either. :(

Medford, Saugus, and Prudential Center KK's all closed. I think they are still operating in Dedham, and presume that's where the Store 24 donuts came from.

yup, they expanded too fast for their own good. and saturated the market, too. I think they could have survived in NE had they not had cases in every gas station and all the grocery/convenience stores.

Hate to say it, but I saw this coming before they even opened up here. It's just not a New England kind of food. The dense layer of glaze thick enough to peel, the fat you can feel on your tongue... I ate a KK once and felt...kind of dirty.

I never did care for them, myself. Always thought they tasted funny. I've still not understood the kraze that is Krispy Kreme.

Now, Dunkin's chocolate kreme filled is where it's at... but hard to find as many places don't carry it.

OMG the donut of death!! I'm convinced the filling is pure cake icing.

Why do you think I love it so much?

Oddly enough, I saw lots of Krispy Kremes in London on a recent trip. That was very odd.

I think they still sell them in packs of a dozen at Shaw's at Porter Square. The KK in Store24 disappeared a while ago. I asked the guy and he said that KK removed it because they weren't making enough - it wasn't store24 that removed them. Probably rising gas costs.. you can only charge so much for a donut.

You have to get them hot and fresh...that's the key. A freshly minted Krisy Kreme is a thing of beauty.

Did you mean to reply to [livejournal.com profile] ah42's comment?

Not necessarily. I meant "in general." As in, even though the grocery store displays are Krispy Kremes, one should be aware of the mindblowing yummyness of the real thing :)

Although, if you can't, a few seconds in a microwave very nearly restores them to their former glory.

I see a Krispy Kreme sign in the front window of Hess Express, at Mass. Ave. and Blake Street. I didn't go in, so I don't know if they actually have the donuts.

Following up my earlier comment: Hess Express does indeed have a stocked rack of Krispy Kreme products.
