Was anyone else's power out all night? I woke up around midnight to no power and it came back on this morning at 7.

i could hardly sleep all night, i was just like, "hottest day of the summer and the power HAS to go out the night before"... i kept having these visions of all those people in Queens lining up around the block for food and ice cream and shit and i thought, "that's gonna be us," and i was sort of hysterical all night. i woke up as soon as the power came back on. i had no idea how much my sanity is based on working air conditioning.

well i don't know if you mean boston or somerville when you say "the whole city", but i live right on the tufts campus on the medford-somerville border, and it seemed like anything officially Medford was lit up while anything officially Somerville was in the dark for as far as I could see.

Somerville Ave was OK -- I didn't lose power.

NStar says a transformer was damaged somehow.

Transformer

Yes ... it was the transformer directly in front of my apartment on Morrison! So, my power was out around 10:30. I think it was restored around 5 am.

Sadly, when my power died, I went to stay with friends who live just past Teele (near Tufts). Yeah ... their power went out at 1 am and wasn't restored until after 7 am.

Maybe it was me!

Thank you. I now feel particularly grateful that I just moved to Medford from Somerville. I live close to Tufts near the border too, and our street had no issues I could tell.

Amazingly, Bay State Avenue didn't lose power. We're usually the first to go dark. :-/

I woke up and noticed the power was off around 2am, and it came back on around 5:30am. Of course, this was the night I finally got an air conditioner... so much for that. Sorry, Somerville, I must have been the one to push it over the edge.

I live near Magoun Square and was asleep before midnight and the power was on. If it went off, it's news to me because I slept like a hibernating bear.

Yeah, I only noticed this morning because the oven clock was blinking.

I was actually surprised that it wasn't that hot last night. I thought I'd actually want to turn the fan on, but I didn't.

My power went out around 1:30am, and apparently came back online around 7:50am today. I'm on the tufts side of Broadway near Teele sq.

When I left to go to work around 6:30am, one of the neon signs and the lights were on at the convenience store next to Theo's, as well as some of the street lamps.

I called NStar at 800-592-2000 to check for updates. The first time (around 1:30am) they said it was due to a failure in high voltage equipment at would be fixed by 6am. Then when I checked around 2:30-3am it changed to 8am. Then I last checked around 7:10am and it had changed to exclude the details but said by 8am.

Well, 7:50 was just the time one of my roommates called me, so I just assumed... I was already at work, where there is A/C :)

Yeah, it went out around 1:50-2am and came back at almost exactly 7am. I had JUST laid down to bed when the power went out. Boo! I was still awake, so I shuffled around and called N-Star about it. It was a high-voltage failure, and they said they were waiting for techs and expected a return to service at 6am.

Unfortunately I had some ancillary failures.. And luckily I was back home or my home network would've been screwed until I got home.

I'm on Bromfield, near Tufts - ours went out at 1:23 (according to the stove clock) and came back at 7:10. It looked like Tufts had lights on, so that supports [livejournal.com profile] bridgesyoucross's Medford/Somerville theory - either that or Tufts has its own generators.

Except that my friend who's a sysadmin for Tufts was apparently up dealing with (lack of) power most of the night. So maybe not.

No power problems today here at Day and Orchard streets, even though we've often had failures in previous years' summer heat waves.

Wacky. I live a block away (Dover and Orchard) and lost power; it came back at around 5:30.

Wacky indeed. You must live on an opposite corner from me (or upstairs?), I noticed the lights dimmed late last night, maybe around 1:00, but then they came back to full power.

Ours came back around 4 AM-ish. I'm not sure when it went out (I woke up and it was dark, so I opened some windows and somehow managed to go back to sleep)!

we had a power hit around 5 am (we’re a few blocks from Porter Square, across the Somerville line). i believe it was a brief interruption, since the UPSes were able to keep the computers going, though the surge when power was restored tripped one of our breakers.

We live about halfway between Highland Ave and Medford Street and we lost power, probably around 2am. We got it back about 4am, though, so it wasn't too bad.

I'm on Simpson Ave and I woke up with 1:30ish without power. It came back about 5:15am. I called the Somerville non-emergency line and they said that it was a power surge problem.

Of course the A/C came back on 5 minutes before I was supposed to get up...

Woke up at 3:30 AM because I was hot. The power was out. I'm in the same area as many of you -- near Teele Sq. / Tufts. I called NStar and they somewhat rudely told me that I had already reported the power outage. I guess someone else in my house already called them, but I wasn't about to go knocking on the doors of three other apartments in the middle of the night. Meh. They told me it would be back up at 8 AM, and I felt like crying. Power actually came back at 7:00, and I decided to sleep in for another hour and a half. Yay flexible work hours...!

What's weird is that I got up to get a drink at around 1:30. I turned on the kitchen light, it flickered for a second and then the whole neighborhood went black. I'm completely serious.

Sorry! ;)

i live a couple blocks from [livejournal.com profile] theodosia and if we lost power it didn't wake me up. none of the clocks were blinking this morning, so either my roommate fixed them before she left for work or we didn't lose power after all. i had my a/c on, so if the power did go out i didn't even notice it wasn't running. hm.

Here's a random tip for when the power goes out again, and I'm completely serious: Wear a wet t-shirt. Everyone always makes fun of me and the obvious joke when I say it, but then they try it and they are obsessed as I am with spreading the gospel. Just run your least favorite shirt under some cold water, put it on, and you'll feel so good you'll swear off AC for the rest of your life. Put down a towel wherever you're going to be sitting/sleeping and you're good to go. It shouldn't be sopping wet, just saturated.

I live on Ossipee Road (near tufts) and woke up around 4:30, hot as hell. I called NStar and the recording claimed there was a problem with "high-voltage equipment", and that the problem would be resolved by 8AM.

...Opened the window and managed to get back to sleep.

Strange... Here in Magoon Sq (B'way and Medford intersection), we lost power for about a second or two at 1:30am. The power came on immediately.

According to a Globe article (http://www.boston.com/news/globe/city_region/breaking_news/2006/08/scattered_power.html), "About 8,700 NStar customers in Somerville and Charlestown had a hot sleep last night when a single transformer broke down and knocked out power.

The transformer, on Alford Street in Charlestown, went down at about 3:30 a.m., stopping air conditioners and ceiling fans with temperatures hovering in the 80s.

NStar spokesperson Michael Durand said that crews restored power to 60 percent of those 8,700 customers after a little more than an hour. The remainder of customers had their electricity humming again by 7 a.m."

(Either their times are a little off or there were multiple failures; I'd guess the former.)
