...so did we all get the phone alert about break-ins in the Porter Sq. area?

It sounded creepy and unfortunate for the two residences that were broken into but I'm not sure I am the better for knowing about it. Locking your doors (mmm... mine is currently not) is SOP in the city if one is concerned about this stuff.

I think this is the 4th or 5th phone alert I have had in the last couple of weeks. (parking, heat, crime). I haven't looked yet but does anyone know if there is an opt-out option that is not going to take me 20 minutes to navigate?

I'm not sure I will opt out but if it starts to get tedious, I will.

Huh, I've gotten a couple of heat-related ones, but not the breakins...Maybe it was limited to Porter Square residents?

No alerts here in Union\Inman Square. Hopefully there will be a story or something on the Somerville city site or other news sites about it.

Since we don't have a land-line phone, I don't get these. I don't really *want* to be automatically called on my cell phone, though. I wish there was an option to get these alerts via e-mail. (There's a city mailing list for snow emergencies, but that's all I could see.)

No. Are you on the Somerville or Cambridge side of the line? I'm in Cambridge, and I haven't gotten any calls at all.

I'm on the Somerville side - just outside Davis.

I made the assumption that they called everyone with that alert. Kind of cool (weird) if they can target certain streets and neighborhoods with specific alerts.

I guess its a 'good thing' - just a little disconcerting.

I got the break-in voice mail, and I live north of Davis Sq. It's the third day in a row that I've gotten an automated message from the city (two about the heat) and I think there was one last week about road closings from the storms. It would be nice to be able to get them by email instead, but I doubt they're set up for that. (At least I get email notification when I get voice mail, from Comcast Digital Voice.)

I've gotten about four notices in the last four days. I think the mayor is going a little nuts with his "reverse-911" technology, and I don't need to know about extended hours for the swimming pools.

On the other hand, I'm happy to get some of the notices. Learning that streets around my house would be closed for the 29th-of-June fireworks was useful. And because of the warnings about the break-ins, I'll keep my windows locked tonight instead of open.

I got the alert. I don't mind them -- to me they feel like a contemporary robotic version of a town crier or village herald, good for when I'm too lazy to check the news or LJ.

That's really weird for people in Magoun and Ball squares to get alerts about things happening at Porter, if people in Davis weren't getting them.
