There are some courts in Cambridge by the main Library. I never played there but it looks available to the public. The address is 359 Broadway, Cambridge.
If you play here, keep in mind 2 things 1. The nets can be a little low, so bring a wrench. It looks like simple hex washers to tighten 2. Weds and Thurs they are closed for lessons
I don't know if this counts as "the area", but there are public, lighted tennis courts along Mystic Valley Parkway in West Medford, next to the Harvard Ave. bridge.
Closer to Davis, I think there are also some on Pemberton Street in North Cambridge, between the street and the railroad tracks.
Yes, there are four public tennis courts on Pemberton St, behind the elementary school: Google Map satellite piccy (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=Pemberton+St+%26+Haskell+St,+Cambridge,+MA+02140&ie=UTF8&ll=42.390371,-71.127639&spn=0.001658,0.004219&t=h&om=1)
