Bed Bugs

Just as a general FYI, my boyfriend and I were walking down College Ave the other day and saw a mattress beside a tree with a note saying that it had bed bugs. Some idiot had opened the plastic cover on it and I think someone else tried to take a frame that was probably with it.

So, keep a look out for those nasty little buggers.

Sadly, bedbugs are common enough that mattresses and couches found on the curb should be assumed to have them and left for the garbage truck.

Unless you plan on rolling around on it, I wouldn't be too worried. Bedbugs like to hang out, well, in beds. They're not gonna just make a leap like fleas.

And if you're throwing out a bed bug infested item, vandalize it, THEN wrap it in plastic and throw it out (with a note).

Use an axe on the wood, and a knife on mattresses and the like. It'll discourage people from reclaiming the item and (giggle) it's fun.

Wow- I'm just impressed that people left a note out with their infested stuff. I get a lot of furniture from the trash, and in the last couple of years, I've cut down a lot because of fears of bugs. If you are throwing stuff out in general, it is really nice to leave notes about things that are infested with bedbugs, covered in mold, containers that are full of really really gross stuff. Or, conversely, if you are putting out something that is in good condition, a note saying "free, take these items!" is a really wonderful thing too.

I've never liked the idea of sleeping on someone else's sweaty dog box. And with an infestation. That's just wrong.

Last time we put out a couch, it was from the porch and had a bees nest in it. So we put a note on it in big letters "CONTAINS BEES NEST" to not only keep people from taking it but also to pre-warn the garbage guys.

We just put out our moth-infested pantry cabinet, and I put a big sign right on the front of it saying BUG INFESTED, DO NOT TAKE INTO YOUR HOME, and I even added in a crudely drawn giant ant attacking helpless tiny people as a bonus for the illiterate and/or whimsical. But, it apparently did no good, as the thing was gone within hours. Hopefully whoever took it doesn't go through the same hell that we just did trying to get rid of those got-damned moths.
