around 5:30 AM or so, there was a noise that reminds me of a cross between a construction machine back up signal and frogs peeping. At first I thought I'd check and make sure it wasn't an alarm coming from my landlords apartment, but it became apparent that it was outside. When I removed the ear plugs that were neccessary for sleeping through it I discovered it was still going on when I woke up at 7:30. Anyone know what this was?

I heard the same thing at about 1am, and I live off Central Ave... As far as I could tell, it appeared to be some kind of vehicle trying to back up all the way down our street... and not doing a very good job of it. I didn't get up to see what kind of car/truck/spaceship it was, though. It went on for at least 20 min, then I think I heard it going down Central.

That was different. It was a truck backing into the driveway across the street, albeit poorly and for about a half hour.

maybe it was someone's fire alarm. we used to have a neighbor when we lived in east boston and their smoke alarms would get set off by dust and go off all weekend when they were away.

enough to drive you mad.

There are motorized sidewalk sweepers, about the size of a golf cart, that Cambridge uses to sweep the sidewalks in Central Square. They make a truck-backing-up beeping noise while being used, constantly.

gas meter noises

I had a gas meter alarm drive me crazy for days. The alarm is suppose to go off when there is a leak but most commonly they go off because they need to be reset. A hard rain caused ours to go off. Try calling your gas company.
