Over in my neighborhood on School St, someone broke into an apartment and stole a bunch of jewelry. Just a friendly reminder to keep your doors locked and an eye out for suspicious characters.

Also make sure to close and lock first-floor windows, and windows on any floor that lead to fire escapes.

It goes right past the school (http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?formtype=address&addtohistory=&address=School%20St%20%26%20Highland%20Ave&city=Somerville&state=MA&zipcode=02143&country=US&geodiff=1), of course! ;-)

I think this would make a great Davis-Union Square community anyway.

There is [livejournal.com profile] somervillemass, but it doesn't get much traffic. People don't seem to mind when I post Union Square event announcements here in [livejournal.com profile] davis_square.

Google Maps will answer that question, assuming you have broadband.

I used to live over in the area -- it's a somewhat dodgy neighborhood, and I never felt quite safe walking at night. There's a particularly tough vibe to everything from School on out towards 93/McGrath, and I wouldn't be surprised to hear about more vandalism in the area.

Passing storm, hopefully.

I'm surprised to hear that. I've lived here in Union Sq. for a year and have nothing but good things to say except for the drunk driver who smashed into my street-parked car.

Union isn't quite so bad. The School St/Medford St intersection struck me as the edge of where things were still in the process of figuring out just how gentrified to be, and that tension seemed to spill over every few months.

Over on Gilman St (in the Medford ST/Pearl St/28 triangle) there was a major narcotics raid in January. Flash-bang grenades and everything.

I hear tell there is a bit of H-Block gang activity in the area.

Fortunately, I'm on a third floor in the area.

What is 'H-Block'?

(Google sends me to H&R Block if I search for that and tell it I'm feeling lucky.)

Read this and especially the comments and decide if there is not enough tough action taken against thugs.

Locks won't stop anyone from breaking in, though it will stop people from waking in :-)
