This year I get dental insurance. It's the first year since undergrad I'll have had it. Whee. But I have to choose a primary dentist. Anyone have one around here (preferably biking distance from me) that they like? I'll check if they're on my insurance.

I highly recommend the Tufts Dental School.

They take insurance, though you will also want to schedule carefully as everything there takes longer than it would otherwise. The major benefit however, is that everything gets triple checked by faculty.

They are in T distance as opposed to biking distance, but if you're having anything major done you won't want to be biking anyway.

I like the dentists at Dental Arts Associates. They have a website here (www.dentalartsassociates.com) and my dentist is Paul Dobrin. They're right in davis, across from the brooks on Highland.

(Though really, it's the hygenist who I see the most, and mine is Stella, and she is absolutely awesome, because she will *explain* things, like how plaque works and why I need to floss.)

Oh, that was fortuitous (I just asked about Paul Dobrin this second, in my comment below). Thanks.

Sorry I can't help you, [livejournal.com profile] desiring_subject, but I have the same question so maybe folks can help both of us! My insurance seems to be fairly limited in terms of providers. Can anyone tell me anything about any of these guys (the ones who seem to be closest to me):

Paul M. Dobrin or Shahram Moghaddam, of Dental Arts Association, 396 Highland Avenue

Francis Moran, 71 College Avenue

Paul K. Shick, 56 College Avenue

Casey Cook at Davis Square Dental.

I've now referred ...many... of my friends to Casey - he's a fantastic guy and a great dentist. The hygenists are also really nice and gentle. Highly recommended!

He is hands down the best dentist I have ever seen. Not just a nice guy, but also very, very good. I had a dental emergency last spring and he saw me right away. Then, I needed a crown, which normally would have taken a month, but he got it in a week, since I was leaving town.

Strongly seconded!! He's the first dentist I've actually enjoyed going to. His staff is professional and fun at the same time. He did my first filling, and I didn't feel a thing--even when he shot me up with novicain. I've never been more impressed with a dentist. Go to him, now!

Seconded, or thirded, or whatever number we're up to now. Casey's great and so are the hygienists.

Sorry, I had to delete my last comment, but what I basically said was:

YEA!!! Go to Casey ... I mean Dr. Cook. Who else would give you recommendationa about your fantasy football team while in the dentist chair??

But, seriously, Dr. Cook is hands down the best dentist in the area (and is, frankly, the best dentist I've ever been to). He's a great dentist and takes the time to explain exactly what's going on in your mouth, what you do and don't need, and and takes extra steps to make you comfortable in his office. He only recommends procedures when you need them. His hygenist, assistant and office manager are maybe the nicest people of all time. And, he throws a Christmas party for all of his patients at The Burren!

I can't say enough nice things about Dr. Cook.

And if you like sports, mention it to him. He'll talk your ear off!

Last time I saw Dr. Cook he told me he has dance parties at his house and my reaction was "No sh*t! I've been thinking about throwing one, too! What's your party like?" and he proceeded to explain to me how he and his kids/wife turn on some music and get down. :)
Man, if he throws a Christmas Party, I'm so there.

My wife went to Karen Bright and had a great experience there, so I guess that's a second.

And a third, she's great! She does everything herself, which is nice.

Fourthed. I've been there twice and never had to wait more than a few minutes to get into a chair.

Dr. Farshad Pasheski @ Gentle Dental

I go to Dr. Pasheski at the Gentle Dental in Porter Square. (I am probably misspelling his name horribly.) He's great! They have gotten me in at the last minute and really worked with me when I switched jobs and switched dental insurers 2/3 of the way through a whole big dental thing with a root canal and crown.

I use Doctor Duarte in Porter Sq. He's good, and knows how to talk to intelligent people and really explain what's going on without talking down at you or glossing over details (unless you want him to).

I have not had a good experience at Dental Arts. I've had multiple appointments rescheduled at the last minute due to the dentist suddenly being out, plus when I am in I get a pretty strong 'used car dealer' vibe when it comes to various add-on services (braces, scrapings, etc). Getting me to go to the dentist is like pulling teeth (try the veal!) already, so if you're like me, you may want to steer for a less hassly place.

I'm a huge fan of Kappa Dental at Kirkland and Cambridge St. I would recommend you stay away from Hart Dental in Inman Sq. I've personally experienced and have had two other reports of them creating a huge false sense of urgency for expensive procedures that go beyond ins. coverage.

Dr. Paul Dobrin

From: [identity profile] claireds.livejournal.com
Have been a patient of Dr. Paul Dobrin (Dental Arts Associates) for about 5 yrs. He is by far the best dentist I have ever had. He takes time to explain everything, is gentle and puts me at ease. Plus he is always in a happy mood, so he obviously loves what he does. The office is nice and very clean, but sometimes it gets pretty busy, so I sometimes have to wait a bit longer for an appointment than I'd like.

I totally second that comment, though I have not had to wait for appointments. Dr. Dobrin is wonderful. Very kind, very professional, and he'll draw pictures or show models of teeth to explain procedures. I started going to him after a bad experience with my previous dentist, and Dr. Dobrin filled a tooth that my other dentist told me I needed a root canal in order to save. That was a few years ago and it's been totally fine since. The dental hygienist I see, Kathy, is also great. Does a super cleaning, and the other people who work there are very friendly. Overall, I highly recommend Dental Arts to anyone looking for a a great dentist.
