I just completed my move from Boston to Somerville (yay!)  But my cute sofabed will not fit up the stairs to my new place.  Does anyone have any recommendations on either hiring a crane to lift it in, or furniture disassembly services?

Update: I've set up an app't with Melo Bros.  They seem very nice, and they gave me a really reasonable price.  Thank you for all of the suggestions!

Does your new place have a balcony? I tied my queen-size box spring up and hauled it up that way (with the help of 3 strong guys). If you're sure it'll fit through the door, you could try that...

Ditto. It was surprisingly easy to move a giant bookcase to our second floor that way with good ropes.

Koloratur- Have you tried obvious things like removing feet from the sofa?

I've used Melo & Sons in Somerville to take apart/put together two sofas. Good guys and efficient work.

On my moves, Gentle Giant movers turned out to be geniuses at getting large pieces of furniture through twisty little stairways and doors, which sometimes involved not only partially disassembling the furniture, but also taking doors off hinges, railings off stairs -- and then, =importantly= getting them put back together correctly afterwards!

Are they really called that? That's hilarious! (in a nervous-making kind of way).

yeah, my bf worked for them ages ago--he has a lot of respect for the owner. they're good guys: not scary :) that was a long time ago though, so i don't have any recent experience with their work to give an honest recommendation.

A piece of furniture that won't fit up the stairs doesn't get to be called "cute". :-)

So the sofa is cute but the stairs are not?

I had my piano moved by the Deathwish fellas. They rocked. Well, actually, I should say they were extremely steady. :) I had seen them driving around Boston long before hiring them, and was very very happy when I finally could get a piano -- and the move called for a crane.
The piano move was not cheap, $500 for commute from Waltham to Davis Sq and crane it to the second floor. I recommend rope over balcony as suggested by others here (if only I could do that with a piano).
