Effective yesterday, the Shaw's supermarket in Porter Square is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

According to a flyer that I just picked up there, the Allston and Prudential Shaw's are also now open 24/7.

HELL YES!!!

Okay, not that I like Shaw's that much or anything, but it will be SO NICE to have a 24-hour grocer in the area, because working late nights does make it difficult to go shopping after work.

That's what the S&S at South Bay does. It sucks.
I need to get to another area...like Camberville or Allbright. :P

That's awesome. It always seemed silly that the CVS was 24/7 and the Star/Shaws/whatever wasn't...

Rockin'. As someone who works second shift, and gets off work after nearly all the grocery stores are closed, I very much welcome this.

Yay. I used to shop there at 1 or 2 or 3 am, until a few years ago when they started closing at midnight and I shifted all my late night shopping to the Super Stop & Shop on the Waltham/Watertown border. Fortunately that was just when I moved back to Waltham, but I came back to camberville last year and it's been frustrating that they close. Now I can go back to old habits :)

Super Stop & Shop on the Waltham/Watertown border.

Can you be a little more specific about where that store is? While I'm glad that Shaw's has belatedly decided to join the twentieth century, I really prefer Stop & Shop if I have a choice.

It's on Pleasant Street in Watertown just where it changes from being River Street in Waltham - that is, just on the Watertown side of the line. River/Pleasant Street is parallel to Main but a few blocks to the south.

Have any of you, back in the Late Night Days, met the Star Shelver "Chuck" who claimed to be an alien abductee, abucted while walking deep down Broadway, past Ball Square one autumn night?

I loved shopping there after midnight for many years and was sad when that ended a couple of years ago, so I'm glad its back. However there is open and then there is open.

What time are they closing the deli counter and the fish counter? I was there at 8:30 pm last night and already they were putting away the fish and the stuff in the deli counter was covered up and no people in sight.

Stop the presses! Camberville is finally getting a 24-hour supermarket, elevating it at long last to the ranks of such sophisticated metropolises as Hermitage, TN (http://clients.mapquest.com/kroger/mqlocator?screen=find&link=map2&sqlcol1=record_id&sqlcnd1=%3D&sqlval1=02400518&queryIconCol=icon_id&addr_origin=&city_origin=&state_origin=KY&zo=&occ=US).

When I moved here in 1990 I had been shopping at all-night grocery stores in various (often podunk) places in the Midwest and on the West Coast for seven or eight years (which is to say, since I moved out of my parents' house and started buying my own groceries; for all I know those places had had 24-hour supermarkets far longer). There were no 24-hour grocery stores here in 1990, nor for several years after. For a while in the mid-to-late '90s the Porter Star was sort of half-assed 24-hour: roughly half the times I decided to go shopping there at 3:00 a.m. it turned out to be one of the nights they were closed. In the late '90s, when the University Park Star was new, it was genuinely 24 hours. That was the happy time. IIRC it lasted about three years.

The change to Non-24 was due to the Shaw's buy-out. It was their corporate policy that they didn't do 24hr stores.

When the sale to Albertson's happened, I started awaiting this change, as I knew they had no such policy.

Yay!
