In a way, each of us has an El Guapo to face. For some, shyness might be their El Guapo. For others, a lack of education might be their El Guapo. For us, El Guapo is a big, dangerous man who wants to kill us. But as sure as my name is Lucky Day, the people of Santa Poco can conquer their own personal El Guapo, who also happens to be *the actual* El Guapo!
You could go ask the billion or so people pouring out of it in an ever so loud and drunken state at the moment. I don't understand how my street remains so blessedly quiet with El Guapo and the Powderhouse Pub at the end of it.
They seem to have a very high opinion of themselves, the prices are way out of whack with the quality of food and drink that you get. Friends and I have been going for the half priced nights (which have since been discontinued) over the last couple of months as those prices were in line with the quality of food. There's also something sketchy going on there with the liquor in some of the mixed drinks. They advertise some very high end tequilas in the margaritas on the menu, but anyone who has tasted these tequilas (or used them in drinks themselves) knows their drinks are not made with the ingredients listed.
I guess my point is this, if all you want is a decent environment you can stick with some of the cheaper stuff on the menu and have a good time. Just don't go expecting any quality food or drink, especially when Tu y Yo and Rudy's are so close by.
Rude unknowledgeable service, mediocre food, good margaritas. Is it a bar, a sports bar, or a restaurant? They seem to be trying to be the Mexican Sauce (all things to all people), and I hope they go the same way (closed!).
I have not been very impressed by El Guapo. I think the menu is over priced and the service is fairly poor. I would definitely agree with those who have suggested Rudy's. Also, if you are looking for a higher end place you might want to check out Tu Y Yo - not far from the rotary. The food is exceptional.
It's okay. I tend not to want to go there because they play music over the speakers at ear-damaging levels. Seriously, the staff should make an OSHA complaint, it's so loud. Me, I just exercise my right not to go there.
I went to Rudy's once. It was the worst Mexican food I have ever had. El Guapo is pretty good. They recently changed their menu, and it's less authentic now, but it was probably a good move because they were never really authentic anyways. Tu y Yo and Jose's are both really good. But Rudy's is aweful.
I forgot to mention that service at El Guapo is inconsistent, and I heard the owner just recently fired everyone and started over. So hopefully it'll be better in the future. The Queso Fundido is really good.
We took a large group of folks there after a theater event in July, and the music was so loud, we could not stay. I was surprised to hear that later thate evening, when the people in our group were the only ones there, they asked to have the music turned down. Twice. And they wouldn't do it. So we are not going back.
