I am looking for some tall, unfinished wooden bookshelves that I can stain or paint. Has anyone has an especially good experience with a place around here? Good pricing? I note there are a lot of options on the other side of the river, but transport will be easier if it's up here.

Thank you!

The ones at Rodney's in Central Square look good.

I do not know if that's too far for you.

I'm fond of the Mills Store:

The nearest one is in Everett. They deliver for a reasonable fee.

Last year I bought these really great, well-made collapsable bookcases from Tags in Porter Square. They were unfinished. I don't remember the price, but I'm a grad student, so they must hae been cheap. ;)

Tags was recently selling them for $19 each. Three shelves, collapsible. Very well made.

Oh, and stackable, too. My neighbor bought at least 12 of them and lined the wall of a room.

I believe those actually have some sort of finish on them - some sort of clear varnish or something. At least the several I got last summer at Tags do. Though it could probably be painted over.

There's one in Porter Square, across Elm Street and half a block toward Union Square from the Shaw's parking lot.

I've bought a bunch of wood boxes - for use as mini-bookcases to store books in weird places - and they're well-made.

It's called Porter Square Furniture (http://www.portersquarefurniture.com/).

I found an unfinished 7'x4' bookcase for $40 or $50 on Craig's List (http://www.craigslist.org/). Check the furniture section often for bargains.

There is a new unfinished furniture store moving into the space formerly occupied by Barney's Automotive Supply store, at the top of Beacon Street, right near Porter Square. Unfortunately, I do not think they are open yet but last time I passed by they looked like preparations were underway.
