I've got a Working Assets mobile phone, and it gets pretty good reception everywhere I've been in Cambridge/Somerville; their network is in fact hosted by Sprint. Their customer service is a bit below-average and their prices are high, but then again, I chose them for their activism.
Just get a free phone and Sprint plan through Amazon, and donate money to the charity of your choice. If you use Working Assets you automatically give money to a whole bunch of organizations, and you can't possibly like all of them, can you?
I have a Working Assets cell, I've never had trouble getting a signal (they buy time off Sprint, so you can ask around about Sprint coverage) and the free phone works fine. The plan I got was a special offer a while back for long-distance customers, but it is similar to their cheapest normal plan. (A little cheaper, fewer minutes.) I don't use my phone heavily, though. (I'd probably be better off with a pay-as-you-go plan but those are a pain to keep active.)
