i'm planning to take the general GRE in a month or so and would like to brush up on the types of questions they ask. i have a book from 2001, but i think the test has changed since then. does anyone have a book tailored to the current format that they'd be willing to lend or sell for cheap? i am very averse to the idea of paying 30 bucks for a new book that i will use maybe two or three times.

thanks.

Just as a suggestion - if you are taking the computer exam (which in all likelihood you are), definitely get the CD that comes with most books now.

When I took the GRE about five years ago, I used the CD about 80% of the time, and the book about 20% of the time. I am confident the CD helped significantly more than the book.

Agreed, you can also download a GRE prep program from ets. It has a number of practice questions with explainations and 2 full length timed tests that are pretty much like the real GRE. It grades everything but the essay part. I used it to study and found it waaaaaaaay more useful than the book.

Don't they have recent ones at the library?

Are there no longer free online study aids? When I took the GRE years ago (2001, I think), I think that was all I used.

I took it in 2004

And as I recall, when you register to take the test, ETS actually sends you a cd of practice tests. That helps with the main parts of knowing the methods of the test. I'm pretty sure the math and verbal sections are the same as always, so an older book should be fine. Scrap the analytic thinking part, and instead there's an essay section. That's the only part that will be different.
