[livejournal.com profile] ron_newman went to the Davis Square Task Force meeting (see discussion here) and heard from the owner of Sacco's Bowl Haven that they hope to keep Sacco's open, but they're not getting a whole lot of business these days. I don't quite know why, since I remember it only a few years ago to be jumping every night (especially Disco Fridays), but it's such a nice old establishment that I though I'd put out a plug to the 800+ people who read this community and possibly send some bowlers their way.

Sacco's (45 Day Street) is like a living slice of history, and its decor is so undisturbed from its 1950s state that it's retro chic without trying. It has lots of candlepin lanes and a room full of pool tables. Only $2.75 a string makes it a great cheap night out, and it's especially fun if you completely suck at bowling. (Trust me on that part.)

I think a lot of us would love to see Sacco's continue as part of the Davis landscape, so if you get a chance, grab a few friends and go bowling sometime. Beat my high score of 68!

I wish with all my heart that Sacco's had a bar. Shooting pool without drinking is like... a metaphor without drinking. Or something.

Agreed. That might be one of the reasons why they haven't been getting a lot of business. I truly do love the place though.

I mean, I suppose you can get liquored up beforehand, but it's just not the same!

I thought they were BYOB?

Does anyone know if there are city ordinances/regs regarding BYOB? (I know, I can look probably look it up at ci.somerville.ma.us, but I'm lazy!)

I used to live in Worcester and BYOB was common out there (including at a candlepin bowling alley in Auburn), but I haven't seen it in Somerville yet.

I would've thought a "retro" candlepin bowling alley would be popular in Davis Sq., but you're right: bowling is just better with beer.

I do completely suck at bowling, and I would love to go to Sacco’s again. [livejournal.com profile] pheromone used to organize outings there.

Great thing about candlepin is that everybody sucks at it. No one's ever bowled a perfect string, and you can get on TV and win money by consistently bowling 120s (I mean not that I have ever watched the local cable-access candlepin bowling tournaments or am a nerd or anything).

Indeed. And I'd be happy to bowl again. :)

OK, how about a Davis Square-LJ bowling event?

We could go, say, on a Tuesday night a 7 or 8 p.m. I know some of us are right in the square about then.

Check to see when their leagues are first, as there might not be a ton of space at those times.

St. Ann's league meets at 8pm on Tuesdays, I am not sure if that means anything. If anyone would be interested in going Friday or Saturday night this week, I'd love to do a group event, and my fiancee said she'd go to. We like Sacco's - we suck so hard at candlepin we don't even bother keeping score, and the desk staff is pretty cool about eyeballing how many strings we've actually played. Since we've gone a few times and paid different amounts, we know we're not just being charged the minimum out of sheer apathy but we aren't getting screwed either. I like that a lot.

I'm sold. They should promote more... I've been in davis a year and never really noticed it.

Oh, apparently it's a dry establishment. Let's try to sell it to a business cognizant enough to purchase a liquor license and sling suds alongside pool and bowling.

*nods*

I miss the excellent beer, munchies, and pool at Big City that was so easily accessible to me when I lived in Brighton.

Unfortunately Philadelphia-area natives like two_stabs and I cannot enjoy ourselves playing candlepin bowling, the only sport ever invented for the purpose of frustrating outsiders to the point of nervous breakdown.

Yeah, but I only know how to play Snooker and that magic billiards game the wizard taught Donald Duck.

Another Philadelphia thing.

to plumtreeblossom: it looks like we now have both a 'local businesses' tag and a 'local business' tag. I suggest removing the second one and reverting to the first.

This is a crazy idea, but back when I lived in Charlottesville there was a group called the Offstage Theater Company that would put on plays in various businesses: they put out a call for one-acts set in or around a bed and performed in a mattress store, for example.

I wonder if a local theater company would be interested in putting on a night of plays set in a bowling alley?

What if those of us at local colleges in the area put a few fliers up here and there, so that new students know about this place?

Go for it! :) Sounds awesome. If you're a Tufts student, any idea if there's a tuftslife category it would fit under?
