mattress store recommendations?

Hi all,

I checked the history and couldn't find any posts on mattresses, so I hope this isn't a repeat. If it is, I apologize. I've been sleeping on a full-size futon for over a year and am ready to upgrade to a queen-size innerspring mattress. I'd check craigslist, but I'm squeamish about used beds. I went into Mattress Discounters in Downtown Crossing today and had a really bizarre experience, and am hoping for recommendations on where I can get a decent mattress that will last for around $300. Does such a thing exist? I hope so.

Also, I read some postings elsewhere about Big John's Mattress Factory, but when I called to check their hours the number was disconnected. Does anyone know about that...?

The guy quoted me much higher prices for their cheapest models than I'd been told one could find at that particular store, and I got a bit of a creepy vibe from him--I got the impression that he wasn't quite sober. I was also the only person in the store, and he was trying *really* hard to sell me a mattress right then and there. I suppose I wouldn't necessarily be very happy if I were working by myself at a mattress store either, but at the very least I'd expected the prices to be lower (my roommate told me she got a Sealy PosturePedic at Mattress Discounters for $200-$300, and this guy was quoting me 2-3 times that).
