Hi all,

I checked the history and couldn't find any posts on mattresses, so I hope this isn't a repeat. If it is, I apologize. I've been sleeping on a full-size futon for over a year and am ready to upgrade to a queen-size innerspring mattress. I'd check craigslist, but I'm squeamish about used beds. I went into Mattress Discounters in Downtown Crossing today and had a really bizarre experience, and am hoping for recommendations on where I can get a decent mattress that will last for around $300. Does such a thing exist? I hope so.

Also, I read some postings elsewhere about Big John's Mattress Factory, but when I called to check their hours the number was disconnected. Does anyone know about that...?

I recommend Sleep-A-Rama in Cambridge, on Mass Ave. between Harvard and Central; there's also a second location in Boston that I don't know anything about. I know the name sounds a little sketchy, but it's totally not. I haven't actually bought anything there but the incredibly flamboyant sales guy was extremely friendly and helpful in a genuine non-creepy way and there were no sketchy high-pressure sales tactics at all like the kind I saw at Mattress Discounters where they had a non-posted sale that ended tonight and where the salesguy absolutely would not leave me and my boyfriend alone. Sleep-A-Rama sells mattresses as well as lots of futons and some other furniture, like lamps and end tables and dressers. They certainly do have mattress in the $300 range (check their website, sleeparama.com) although I couldn't tell you how well they hold up.

Alternatively, 1-800-MATTRESS has a good reputation, although they say you can try out the mattress before accepting the delivery and I found that to be false; the delivery guys refused to let me try out the bed and lied to me about the return policy in order to get me to sign the purchase order so they could go. (That said, I do think I got a decent deal, and the salesperson I dealt with was very nice.)
