Businesses in Davis
Oct. 9th, 2006 03:57 pmHi group, I'm thinking of starting a business in Davis, something possibly with a store front, and am trying to come up with some ideas. What do you think is sorely lacking in Davis?
Cheers,
Ron

Date: 2006-10-09 08:45 pm (UTC)Tower Records is closing in Harvard Square. Virgin Megastore is closing in the Back Bay. HMV closed all of its local stores a year or two ago. This suggests a big hole in the market for someone local to fill.

Date: 2006-10-10 07:07 am (UTC)Part of the problem is online commerce, another major problem is that places like Best Buy routinely sell CDs for under cost. The idea is that the same folks who will come in to buy the latest from Gnarls Barkley for $10 will come back someday to buy a Plasma screen. And apparently, judging from Best Buy's sales (and the music chains' lack of), it's working.
For anyone who likes classical music, this is apparently a huge blow -- there will no longer be any store with that kind of selection in the entire Commonwealth. When I was there around closing tonight, there was a man who was complaining as such, with a basket filled with a good $1,000 (minimum) of classical CDs -- he said if he didn't buy them now, he'd likely never be able to find them again.
