So my garbage disposal is well and truly broken; neither the reset button nor the put-a-hex-wrench-in-the-bottom-and-turn-it method of DIY fixing did a damn thing, and my sink remains full of funky water and cilantro flotsam. And I honestly don't have any idea who to call--an electrician? A plumber? Who knows how to fix these things?

If someone could recommend to me a local-ish person I could call to come fix my garbage disposal, I'd be very grateful.

These things are built to the quality standard of toasters, not like real appliances. Generally, you don't fix them, you just replace them. (They're priced a bit more than a toaster, but not by that much.)

A plumber will certainly do the job, but that's gonna cost you probably the minimum hourly charge, so a hundred bucks or so -- more than the disposal itself. Whatcha really want is a handyperson.

Not intending to impugn your intelligence, but it it at all possible that someone in your household threw something like a bunch of grease down the sink? I came home once to hear my partner tell me we needed a new disposal b/c ours had stopped working - after trying the reset switch, etc. I asked what she had put in the drain recently... BACON GREASE! It had solidified around the disposal blades so it couldn't work. I fixed it by emptying as much of the stagnant water as possible, then applying BOILING (not just faucet-hot) water to re-melt the grease and flush it out.

Give it a try - it's no worse if it doesn't work.
