Apologies if this is common knowlege, but can anyone tell me the process to set up a performance in the square (ie, the park benches and stuff where there's always musicians?)

Who do I need to talk to, is there a cost, rules on what can and can not be performed, etc?

I suggest asking Alderman Rebekah Gewirtz. I think the main rule is to shut the performance down by 11 pm, since people live right above the plaza and want to sleep.

If the square space doesn't work out, the ball field over at Holland and Simpson may be worth a try. I've seen some sort of martial arts group practicing/doing demos there over the summer.

Or Seven Hills Park, behind the Somerville Theatre. I often see people doing some kind of martial art there.

Yes. Our instructor (professor marquinho coreba from capoeira gerais brazil) is new to the US from brazil, and is just getting started forming a group. I've only learned from him (for about six months) so I'm afraid I'm not terribly impressive to watch, though he and a companion school has a demonstration tonight somewhere in boston, I will pass that info along when I get it later today.

Right now, we have a class on mondays in boston right near south station - at the Fred Astaire Dance Studio (fadsboston.com). The first class was last week, so if you get started now you'll be learning among the beginners. Pricing is on the website, and there is pricing for dropping by for just one or two classes too, so no commitment required. If you plan on going, let me know!
