This morning, all of the turnstiles have been removed from the Davis Square T station. Everyone has to walk in and out of one rather narrow gate, dropping a token or change into the box or showing your pass to the attendant.

This would be a sounder theory if there were a noticeable increase in escalator outages after percipitation, and it just doesn't hold true.

I developed the theory after noticing that the down-going escalator on the park entrance to Davis always seemed to break for short periods of time after heavy rain or snow. I haven't bothered to gather actual data, and the many-days outages seem to be weather-independent, but it was noticeable to me.

The only weather correlation I've been able to draw is for the escalator at the front of the inbound red line platform at Park Street. That's related to cold and not snow or rain, and I suspect it has far more to do with human shelter-seeking than accidental mechanical failure.

Hmm. Clearly, the Boston weather is tough on escalators, but New York, for example, doesn't seem to have such a bad problem. I could be wrong, though. Here's an idea for the el-cheapo work-around: If rain and snow consistently conks out the escalators, just turn off the down escalators when the weather is crummy. This probably wouldn't signifcantly increase their time out of service, but it would save money on repairs and help me hate Kone less.

Wait, I just thought of something: if it's rain and snow that are the escalator killers, why do the up escalators go out of service? People don't generally have loads of snow on their shoes after riding the T, right?
