India Palace in Union Square is less than a mile away, a decent walk, and they're excellent. Got a Boston Choice award or somesuch for being good food and inexpensive. :)

also, India Palace delivers. i can't count the number of times i had them drive the few blocks up the hill during the three years i lived on Prospect Hill. solidly good, pretty cheap, and still the best pistachio milkshakes i've ever been able to find.

i don't remember offhand... i vaguely think maybe a $10 or $15 minimum for free delivery, but they'll charge you a dollar or two for delivery if you order less than that? i tended to always order enough to get a few meals out of it, so...

Not quite in Winter Hill, but I tend to go to Indian Club (http://www.indianclubrestaurant.com/) on Mass Ave near Porter or Namaskar (http://www.namaskarcuisine.com/), the new Indian place in Davis Square.

Saini Sweet shop, which is near Union Square on Summer Street, is the best kept secret as far as Indian food in the area goes. Cheap and tasty. It tastes more like the Indian food I used to get at my friend's house than any other restaurant I've been to in Boston.

Across the street, at the Doaba convenience store, they have the best samosa I've ever had anywhere.

my personal favorite is still Punjab in arlington center, though a bit of a ways from winter hill. i used to like Diva a lot, but last i checked seemed to have gone downhill and turned a bit too deco for me.
punjab also has an indian foods store/cafe across the street where you can get chai and desserts.

mmmm, Punjab. Punjab rocks. It would rock more if it were open - I went there a week ago and there was a "Closed until further notice" sign. I stood forlornly in front of the restaurant, nose pressed up into the glass, until the owner came out and said they had a kitchen fire, and gave me a tour of the damage.

Anyone know if Punjab has re-opened?
