We need a leak repaired in our roof and we were wondering if anyone here had a roofer who was prompt and did a good job. The last two we dealt with never even delivered a contract and kept us waiting. Thanks!

Unfortunately from what I've heard your experience is pretty much standard for people in eastern Mass. trying to hire contractors these days. Hopefully you don't end up hiring the same meatheads my landlord hired in summer of '05. (No, I don't remember their names; it was three guys in a plain white truck. I started thinking of them as Larry, Moe, and Curly.)

There's a bunch of good consumer info out there on how to hire contractors. I strongly suggest you read it, especially since it sounds like you've already had a couple of negative experiences. I'd hate to see you not only have a negative experience but to pay huge sums of money to have a negative experience.

Good luck

Arens (or is it spelled Ahren's, or something like that?) I think I gave you the recommendation a few years ago--they did my entire roof in 2002. And they were the only people who actually gave me an estimate and followed through. (We did get an estimate from Carroll, talked to the guy, he came over and showed us samples, and we called to hire him and--nothing.)

Anyway, Arens (or Ahren's, or Arhen's or something like that) were excellent. Started when they said they'd start, gave us the estimate, were very responsive and professional. Love 'em.

Sigh - Aaren's is the one currently blowing us off. :-( I'm giving him one more call today to deliver a contract, and then I'm moving on.

Send me an email if you're free for dinner tonight (or any other night this week).

:-)
Andrea

Whatever you do, do NOT hire Welton Alves. He did the roof on our building, and supposedly it has a 30-year warrenty, but he doesn't answer phone calls EVER. I've been calling him for MONTHS to get the roof fixed as it leaks (err, maybe another reason not to hire him), and I can't get him to call me back.

I had good luck with WJN Construction in E. Bridgewater. They didn't give me a contract, but they showed up when they said they would and kept to budget. In fact, they told me going in that the job might cost significantly more, depending on what they found under the flashing, but they said it was fine and used the initial estimate. It's been about 2 years and so far no leaks.

I had good luck with a guy out of Cambridge

He did my roof in the spring. So far we're still dry. :)~
His name is Andrew and his number is 617-519-3662. I forgot the name of his company - but he's basically a one man operation, he hired a couple of guys to help him strip my old shingles but does most of the work himself.
