Wizard rocker Alex Carpenter is back in town with his The Remus Lupins performing a post-Yule Ball “Fight Evil, Read Books” concert at one of his favorite bookstore haunts. Inspired by the Harry Potter series, Carpenter champions the reading-is-cool movement by using his special style of rock music to spread the word.

The day before his “fight evil” concert at McIntyre & Moore Booksellers, Alex Carpenter and his The Remus Lupins will appear at the Yule Ball at the Middle East in Central Sq., Cambridge (Sunday, Dec. 10th, 2 shows, 12:30 pm and 6 pm, $12). This annual event celebrates all things Wizard Rock and this year features many of the heavy hitters of the genre, including Harry & the Potters, The Remus Lupins, and Draco & the Malfoys. Part of the proceeds from the Yule Ball will go to benefit Reach Out and Read (www.reachoutandread.org), a Boston-based, national, non-profit organization that promotes early literacy by making books a routine part of pediatric care. Since the Yule Ball is essentially a Winter Prom for students of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, fans are encouraged to dress up for the show. For two days, “Draco dormiens nunquam titillandus” will be the motto of the Cambridge/Somerville area.

Background information:

The Remus Lupins music is rooted in a deep respect for melody and harmony, reminiscent of everything from the Beatles to Bright Eyes, Death Cab for Cutie, and The Decemberists. The Remus Lupins, along with Draco & the Malfoys and Harry & the Potters, is considered one of the vanguard bands of the full fledged wizard rock scene. The music is upbeat and feel good without ever devolving into mindless fluff. Alex Carpenter’s music is very mindful of its muse, Remus J. Lupin, a central character in the Harry Potter series. Professor Lupin was teacher of Defense Against the Dark Arts during Harry Potter’s third year at Hogwarts Academy. He is also a member of the Order of the Phoenix and is a werewolf. According to Carpenter, Remus Lupin is “so well intentioned, always wanting to do the right thing. Inside of him, there is this darkness though, something out of his control that people really can connect to.” In a similar vein, Carpenter’s The Remus Lupins is able to sing feel good tunes that simultaneously explore very poignant emotional issues.
