Gobble Gobble Gobble road race
Nov. 21st, 2006 10:57 pmOn Thursday there will be a road race in Davis Square.
It's too late to register (deadline was November 20th), so this mostly serves as a warning to people who want to drive on Thursday morning. (It doesn't go down my street, so I have no recollection of whether traffic gets held up for this race, anyone know?
Starts at 9am in Davis; the race goes up Holland to Teele Square, up Packard to Powderhouse, Broadway to Medford Street, Central to Somerville Ave, and Elm back to Davis Square.

Date: 2006-11-22 05:41 am (UTC)I'd also like to encourage anyone in the race to please have a heart and let people who are driving cross the road. I almost missed my plane home one year because no one would let my friend's car through for 20 minutes. If we'd known about the race (I had no idea; it wasn't advertised well enough) I would have made alternate plans. There were no signs posted encouraging alternate routes. As a broke post-college student who could only afford to fly out of Providence on T-Day, I really wanted to get home and spend much needed family time.
Please remember not every driver out there is out for a pleasure cruise in the morning, and it's possible they've been waiting to cross the road for several minutes, and they would really like to see their family that day, too.

Date: 2006-11-22 03:26 pm (UTC)The streets are closed for a reason - to make it safe for the runners. Sorry for the inconvenience, but it's one day a year for a few hours...

Date: 2006-11-22 06:19 pm (UTC)That year the streets weren't closed, as far as we knew. There were no signs at all, no alternate routes suggested, and we definitely didn't see any signs around town advertising the event. We would have happily taken an alternate route if information had been provided.

Date: 2006-11-22 11:54 am (UTC)Road closings?
Date: 2006-11-22 02:34 pm (UTC)Thanks!
Re: Road closings?
Date: 2006-11-22 03:30 pm (UTC)The exception is the start/finish line, which is generally closed off a little before the beginning of the race, but I do not think you have much to worry about at 5:30am. If nothing else the cabbie will just take College to Powderhouse and down Broadway (instead of going through Davis to Highland to Broadway)
