So I was just told that all the parking meters in Someville run on disposable AA batteries...hopeing someone knows if this is true or not.

Do you know the manufacturer of the meters in Somerville? It looks like common meters run on 9-volt batteries. See a battery supplier web page here: http://www.batteryclinic.com/parking.htm

Hmmm, I wouldn't be surprised. A meter could run on one set of batteries for years. Probably a lot more cost-effective and overall less environmental impact than stringing them all to wires.

And the failure mode is pretty harmless: the meter goes dark. My guess is that the people who collect the change also carry spare batteries, and that there's a low battery indicator of some sort (possibly visible only when the meter is open).
