ABJ Automotive, on Marshall Street in Somerville. 617-625-6632. Recommended by me, all of my friends with cars, and all of a large local mailing list I'm on. Ask for Al (you'll end up talking with him anyway). It looks like a hole-in-the-wall combined with an auto graveyard; this, to me, is always the look of a good shop.
Hands down, Koko Aroyan at Foreign & Domestic Auto on Boston Ave in Medford (behind Tufts). He's excellent. (http://www.cartalk.com/ct/mechx/shop.jsp?id=10806)
(Besides, how much of a bonus is it to have a mechanic named Koko?)
i don't have any recs for the davis square area, but this website: http://www.cartalk.com/content/mechx/ has really helped me in finding a mechanic. there are reviews & ratings from folks on basically any mechanic you can think of. good luck!
I've had good experiences with Fred Hubbard's Gulf station on highland ave. Might not be the cheapest mechanic around, but the staff are very knowledgable and you can't beat the short walk (http://www.google.com/maps?hl=en&lr=&safe=off&q=fred+hubbard&near=Somerville,+MA&radius=0.0&latlng=42387500,-71100000,17609489084585889241&sa=X&oi=local&ct=authority) from the center of davis.
don't go to the valvoline station on mass ave in cambridge. they stripped two of my lug nuts while attempting to rotate my tires... friendly people, but incompetent.
