Rich, who owned and ran the Urban Gourmet in Ball Square until he sold it last summer, opened this Thursday a new restaurant in Somerville. It's called City Slicker, and it is next to Conway Park at 588 Somerville Ave.

It's similar to the Urban Gourmet, except a little bigger and a little better. It still has gourmet pizzas, sandwiches, calzones, burgers, pasta dishes, and meat and fish entrees. It delivers to Somerville and North Cambridge and some of Medford. There is a parking lot in the rear. And the food is great! I had the paella; my husband had the pan-seared pork chops. The restaurant has the same crew as the old restaurant had. Rich said he recommends the Portuguese pulled pork sandwich, which is an old family recipe.

The restaurant has opened just in time for the Patriots' game on Sunday. Order your pizza now: 617-625-0700.

thanks for the ad spam. good job making a sockpuppet account, too.

I am such a huge fan of Urban Gourmet and was sad when it burned down. I noticed the City Slickers menu and the description of the pizza (slow cooked, 25 minutes!) plus several of the other menu options looked familiar...
We ordered a buffalo chicken pizza last night from there and it brought back Urban Gourmet memories. We asked if they were related...they said no. guess they lied :(
anyway, it is great, and I am so happy we have something to hold us over until Urban Gourmet open again!

I'm pretty sure at least that: a) a guy named Richard Warner used to own (http://209.85.165.104/search?q=cache:-J8pdJk-7h0J:www.ci.somerville.ma.us/CoS_Content/documents/agenda/06-19-06Licensing.pdf+%22richard+warner%22+%22urban+gourmet%22&hl=en&gl=us&ct=clnk&cd=1&client=firefox-a) the Urban Gourmet; and that b) a guy named Richard Warner just opened (http://209.85.165.104/search?q=cache:yH7yrYmaWu8J:www.ci.somerville.ma.us/CoS_Content/documents/agenda/licensing%2520commission%252012-18-06.pdf+%22City+Slicker%22+somerville&hl=en&gl=us&ct=clnk&cd=5&client=firefox-a) the City Slicker cafe.

I met him last night as I ordered the pizza I'd been missing - it's the very same. (Note the new place bears the name of an UG pizza). I had to fight the urge to ask *how* he makes that wonderful crust (shortening? still can't figure this out). And, a staffer from Charlie's Kitchen stopped by to surreptitiously check the place out, as well. He's recruited at least one of his old crew from the Urban fire, and the newbies are training.

Chowhound is already putting CS on the watchlist - a combination of enthusiastic fans, and, well... you know.

I was the biggest Urban Gourmet fan, until they burned down. I got the City Slickers "Buffalo Chicken" pizza the other night, and it was just like Urban Gourmet's was. Thank god. Urban Gourmet is taking forever to reopen. City Slickers is just as good.

I'm sure that, having sold the location, name and menu of Urban Gourmet, he's not allowed to say the new place is related.

who cares if it is just an ad? It's always nice to know about new places opening in and around the square, and to start conversations about their quality. Especially then the new places fill a current void.

I hope he can make a go of it there. 588 Somerville Avenue seems cursed, I've seen so many places open and close there over the years.

Well-liked local restaurateur reopens at a new location after being burned out of his original one? I think that's quite relevant here.

Not quite...

He wasn't "burned out" of Urban Gourmet. He sold the restaurnat to Yasser and it burned down months later under Yasser's ownership.

Yeah, I noticed that. I watch the Boston Chowhound RSS feed, and in the last week or two, there've been three top-level posts about CS that showed up on the feed, but were baleeted by mods by the time I clicked through to the actual post.

Based on that, and living around the corner from it, I gave it a try Saturday; had the pulled pork and goat cheese sandwich. Yum!

you're telling me! I even offered to go over on a weekend and help clean up. Jaime, the #2 over at Sound Bites, said they were hoping for within-a-month, but we'll see. In the meantime, the "creamy roasted garlic" dressing is the same, and the Chicken Broccolini is a nicely updated version of the old standby, Lemon Grilled Chicken.

Chicken Piccata's next on my list - a good test of technique. Rich suggested the Portugese pulled pork sandwich, and I'm also excited about the fried shallots available with salads.

Yay, Rich and Jen! (Jen's still around, right?)

Yeah, I saw that as well ib Chowhound. Do you have any idea why they pulled those posts?

Thanks

Thanks so much for this post.
I missed the Urban Gourmet and was very happy to hear about City Slicker. They delivered me a pie last night and it was delicious!
I am so glad to have them back.

I wanna see their menu before I order - does anyone know if it's available on-line somewhere, or if they have some of the same products as UG?

Thanks for the find, pearly!

Something about that location... If you are in your car, you just want to keep driving and not pull over.
