I am seeking a nearby tattoo artist, to reink an existing tattoo and possibly provide a new one. Is there one in the area? My three priorities are (1) Cleanliness, (2) Friendliness, and (3) High Quality of Art, in that order. Thank you muchly.

Unrelatedly, I would like to find a place nearby that sells yarn, preferably in the Davis/Porter area of the universe. There HAS to be someplace. I just can't find it.

Thanks again.

There's a knitting store on White St. in Porter, and the recently opened Spark Crafts off of the Brooks parking lot (technically Grove St. I think, but if you think of it that way it's hard to find.)

The yarn store on White Street is called Mind's Eye Yarn: http://www.mindseyeyarns.com/. I live with knitters and they love that place.

I would recommend Mongo's Tattoo Madness, which is actually outside Union Square.

Mongo is my landlord. I can't speak to the tattooing, but they're good people.

there's also a place in Arlington, right near the theater, The Knitting Room. they have a much larger selection than Spark and they carry a fair amount of non-wool options.

spark has actually been expanding their selection, and carry lots of really great yarns now. although i do LOVE the knitting room. and jackie (the owner). she's just great.

sadly, they've mostly been expanding the wool selection, and they got rid of at least one of their nice cottons. which is kind of sad, as one of the owners is allergic to wool and they espoused wanting to have a nice non-animal fiber selection when i spoke to them after they opened :(

well, this makes sense, as it's winter. and wool is far warmer than cotton. i'm sure they'll roll out more cotton yarns as the weather warms. this is a normal thing for yarn stores to do.

The only place for tattoos I can personally recommend is Federal Hill Tattooing in Providence. Sorry. I got all my ink before it was legal here.

There's also another yarn store on JFK in Harvard Square. Mind's Eye Yarn is great but the selection is small (and pricey!).

The one on JFK street is Woolcott, which I also really recommend. The people who work there are super-helpful and they have a good selection and it's not as pricey as Mind's Eye

For not as high end yarn, I do Michael's and AC Moore.
For nicer yarn;
I do some shopping at Woolcott in Harvard Square, but they're hit or miss in terms of friendliness/helpfulness IME.
I love the Knitting Room in Arlington.
AND, I just discovered that Windsor Button downtown (on Temple Place, so the Park Street stop on the Red Line) has somehow become a really nice yarn store since the last time I was there (7 years ago). I haven't been to Mind's Eye yarns, but I hear they're really nice.
Oh, and duh, Spark Craft in Davis Square (sort of next to the T, across the street from the Brooks/Osco/Whatever it is now). They've got a small yarn collection too.

What kind of yarn are you looking for?

There is a very nice yarn shop in Harvard - Woolcott & Co. ... but with high quality you get high prices.
I think there is a place in Porter down the side street from Peir One and the Shaw's plaza, but I've never ventured a look in.

And an AC Moore in Assembly Mall, but that is a bit further out.

Both I and my gf have gotten tattoos at Redemption on Mass Ave:
http://redemptiontattoo.com/

They are clean, friendly and talented. I don't know much about Mongo's...

The word is that the absolute best tattoo shop in the area is Fat Ram's, but the waiting list is like six months.

I recommend anyone at Fat Ram's in JP. I got mine there and know several other VERY happy Fat Ram customers.
It's worth going out of your way. Everyone there is super nice and it's a really happy, creative atmosphere.
There IS a 6 month waiting list for a tattoo from Fat Ram himself, but there are other awesome artists in his studio with almost immediate availability. I only had to wait a couple of days.
Chad did mine and I could not be happier.

Thanks for the info on Windsor Button Shop....it's always been a great store for buttons, yarn, sewing and embroidery supplies, ribbons, etc. and I didn't realize it was still there. Great to know!
Also, don't know much about tattoos in this area (my son got a BEAUTIFUL tattoo for $10 on the beach in Hawaii!!), but I believe that Mongo's Tattoo madness is owned by the woman who runs the Somerville Cares About Prevention Program to help (mostly) kids with drug and alcohol problems. So, if you're interested in supporting someone who's giving back, they might be a good choice. Again, can't recommend their work specifically, except to say that they've been around for a long time.

There's a sewing supply store right in Davis Sq. I bought ribbon there once, they might have yarn as well. It's part of the same building as the Post office and is right across the street from Mr. Crepe's.
