Today's Metro features a photo and short article about our own [livejournal.com profile] ron_newman, showing off the discarded CharlieTickets he's been gathering that collectively have more than $50 value on them. He plans to consolidate the value onto one card and donate it to charity.

Way to go, Ron!

What a great idea, Ron! I find the CharlieTicket v. CharlieCard deal a mess. I'm glad that someone is spinning the confusion to some benefit.

now I know...

How does one consolidate card value? I belive I was told by an MBTA employee that it was impossible.

I'm going to visit the Charlie office at Downtown Crossing some time this week or next. They transfer value from tickets to cards.

One annoying thing is that you have to leave the T station proper to get to the office that does the transfers. So, unless you need to get off at Downtown Crossing, you have to pay $1.75 (or more) to transfer the money to a card. Kind of sleazy, if you ask me...

Yeah, I never read the Metro but today I thumbed through the one lying on the seat next to me and saw that article.

I wonder if this might encourage the MBTA to set aside a box where people can donate their leftover tickets that still have value on them. Or at least publicize better that cards with small amounts of value on them can have additional value added or be consolidated, so people don't just throw them away (though I guess the T is just as happy to have people pay for something they don't actually use.)

Hahaha.

Oh, of course not.

Discarded CharlieTickets are an important source of revenue for the MBTA now.

specifically, on page 4 of that PDF.

I now have 43 tickets worth a total of $58.30. (Either I gave the wrong numbers to the Metro reporter last week, or she took them down incorrectly.) I haven't yet gone to Downtown Crossing with them, but still intend to do so within the next 10 days.

Or if I just throw the 70 cents on myself. However, I don't know if the T office will convert stored value into a pass. Also, it's now getting towards the middle of the month, so if I did that I'd want to wait until after the 15th.

I posted a final update on this project. Later this week, I'll deliver a $68 CharlieCard to the Somerville Homeless Coalition.
