Pandemonium is a niche book store in Central Square in need of support because they're going through financially tough times. The whole story can be read here if you'd like.

This is relevant to Davis in that supporting local businesses seems to be something the Davis Square LJ community as a whole supports, and I think 3 T stops out counts as pretty local, and I know of at least a few people in the Davis area who care very much about this store.

If there are another few comments that this post sucks/isn't relevant/isn't informative enough, I'll go ahead and remove it. No need to be condescending or angry about it.

However, Your Move Games *is* in Davis Square, and while they don't sell books, they too need support and having open gaming space, tournaments, a full set of Magic the Gathering, World of Warcraft the CCG, Yugioh!, Naruto, and practically any card game you can think of, plus a plethora of board games, rpg manuals, paintable miniatures and smaller tabletop games.

no offense to Pandemonium. we like you guys just fine. Jason says hi! *waves to ben*

actually, in its new location, Comicazi mainly has crazy collectible toys, with a good selection of weeklies and trade paper backs. if you need those limited edition star trek tng picard statuettes and simpsons figurines, you are so set. (also, the guys who work there are some of the geekiest geeks i've had the considerable pleasure geeking out with.) (that was not an insult.)

Sorry, Comicazi so does not fulfill my needs for comics and graphic novels. It had gotten better the last time I checked in (at the old location), but was still pretty closelytied to the tights 'n' fights genre.

They can, and will, order pretty much everything, though. I've gotten GREAT books off them, and they're just shiny shiny people in general.

how about not-fucking-at-all Davis related and never was?

There are some decent book and gamings tores in Davis that could use support, too.

If youre going to post off topic, fine. Lord knows there are enough of us geeks around to find this interesting. But at least have some balls and admit it.

not "totally" Davis?

Yeah, I'm really not the post-nazi type, but I wouldn't mind if this one vanished in the night.

How about not being a condescending prick?

Whether or not this is Davis related, there was a very reasonable argument made for posting this here, and moreover, a request that posts about relevance not "be condescending or angry".

seconded - let's be respectful here, it's one of the things that distinguishes [livejournal.com profile] davis_square from [livejournal.com profile] b0st0n

Just scroll down a bit. The fact is, D_S is already well on its way to becoming b0st0n. I'm starting to think it's inevitable for lj communities once they've reached a critical mass. Snark is, and it's likely to get worse.

I don't see anything to scroll down to - the two lines I posted above are all that I see on that page.

Scroll down in this thread. Then, kindly give me a polite reading of:

Should I assume from your silence that snark with which you agree is more acceptable than that which you do not?

Welcome to b0st0n.

How do you appeal for mutual respect when seconding a response that calls someone a "condescending prick?"

OK, folks, keep it calm and polite. "not-fucking-at-all Davis related" and "not being a condescending prick" are good examples of neither, from both sides. Deep breaths.

I'll also point out that not once did you mention why they're in need of our support. But don't worry, 'll do that homework for you (http://community.livejournal.com/pandemonium_bks/78632.html).

That link wasn't in the original post, it was edited in later. As is obvious from the "edited to please the populace" snark in the subject line.

Of course, I'm with overstim et al, and think it's absurd that Central Square is now considered "Davis Square." Hey, I can drive to Maine from Davis Square, can I post about shows going on in Portland? I live in Davis but work downtown, so places to eat near my work is on topic, right? *headdesk*

Davis-to-Central is certainly part of the same extended neighborhood/corridor/whathaveyou, so I think the occasional post for Central Sq happenings is fine.

Welcome to LJ where people take out the frustrations in an anonymous fashion hidden by a screen name!

I didn't even know that they had moved until this was posted to the boston community. Damn. I love that store.

FWIW, I know at least a couple of the workers there live in the Davis Square area, so you would be supporting a couple 'locals'.

I am still unsure why they thought it was a good idea to move to Central. Was it a rent issue from the Garage? I seem to recall a post/survey of horror where Tyler suddenly realized that the plan of building a "non-stop convention where fans can meet" was shown to be shakey as, according to a survey, fans didn't really want to meet after all.

I was in there weekly, if not more often, when the store was in Harvard. In it's new location, I think I've been there three times. To get there from Davis, I have to walk by or near Your Move, Comicazi, Porter Sq Books, the Coop, Newbury Comics, Million Year Picnic, New England Comics, Games Workshop, the Harvard Book Store, and Games People Play, all stores where I can likely find something to buy with my nerd-dollars. If there's a specific item I want, there's also that whole Internet for me.

It'll be sad to see Pandemonium go, but if (when?) it does, it won't impact my life much. I'm not sure "Buy T Shirts!" is a better business plan than "Meet other SciFi fans!"
