This would be so sad. La Contessa has so much character and the people there are so nice. Not to mention... I think life it so much nicer when there's a bakery nearby.
A few months ago I had to be interviewed for a documentary and the film makers wanted to do this in a coffee shop in Davis Square. We first went to a certain well-known area coffee shop and they said we could couldn't do it there even though it just involved one small handheld camera. So we went to La Contessa and they were unbelievably nice and supportive about letting us film there! They even moved stuff around for us and turned down their music and so forth. It made such a great backdrop for the interview too! :)
I'm curious...was the well-known area coffee shop the non-chain one on Elm? I ask because my friends and I were meeting there for a "fashion" breakfast regularly (to eat and take pictures of each other to post online on LJ) and we were stopped from taking photos.
All I'll say is that I have no idea what it takes to run a coffee shop and I bet there's a logical reason why management would decide to have a no filming or photography policy. :)
I would definitely do sushi more often than pastry - but it depends on the quality, really. I'll go out of my way if it's really good - but I won't bother walking the few blocks if it's crappy.

(I think I would likely go get sushi more often than go get pastry, but then, I live right near Yoshi's and haven't eaten there in years.)
The gentrification implications are enormous. But, in many ways, that fight was lost the moment the Someday closed.
