I keep meaning to ask one of the MBTA employees sitting just inside the door between the elevator and the College Street stairs in the Davis T station why, exactly, they're sitting just inside the door between the elevator and the College Street stairs in the Davis T station.

The practice seems to have started some time this winter. Anyone have any ideas what they're doing there?

It has something to do with the elevator alarm not working, but I don't know much more.

Every time I've gone by, it appears to be a place for MBTA employees to play Nintendo DS.

While we're at it, why is there a cop parked, engine running, in the fire lane of Home Depot in Assembly Square every hour of the day that the store is open?

Is theft so bad there that they need an added "I'll run you and that Dremel set down if I need to" layer of protection?

Is that a place where you would park if you wanted to ticket speeders on Mystic Avenue?

A lot of arrests for drug deals in the Somerville Journal's police blotter are in that parking lot.

And because of the location it's probably a good place for a cop to wait and be able to get to a lot of other places quickly.

For whatever reason, that parking lot had a huge problem with people parking and dealing or doing drugs, specifically heroin, I believe. It became (according to the articles I read) such a nuisance that the city demanded that Home Depot patrol the parking lot, which Home Depot refused to do. So the fire department showed up at the store, found some minor violation, and closed the store, mid-day. I presume that Home Depot wised up and now pays a cop $40 an hour in detail pay to sit there.
