the magazine was Utne Reader.

Brooks Pharmacy was Osco Drug then, and will soon be Rite-Aid.

I believe it was Rolling Stone, and then re-reported in UTNE (back when their tagline was "the best of the alternative press").

I was under the impression that it was an Utne original - it came out just as I was moving here in early '96, so it stuck with me. The article praised the cafes and bookstores of Davis Square, at a time when the only actual bookstore was Buck-a-book...
