La Contessa

When I talk to Annette, I'm never sure she's giving me the straight story. But today she told me that she expects her last day of business will be Mother's Day, May 13.

She also expects to have a goodbye party (or closing party, or wake, or whatever you want to call it) at the shop on Monday, April 30.

She wrote that three weeks ago. I don't know what, if anything, has happened since. Annette told me that the Someday Cafe folk had visited her eariler this week, but that they didn't have the finances needed to take over the shop.

Is the sign at least going to the Somerville Museum or some other civic purpose?

That's an interesting idea I haven't heard before. You should mention it to both Annette and the museum.

Tomorrow if the sky is nice I'm taking pictures of both the La Contessa sign and the jewelers' sign across the street, because given the work that's going on inside the place, it won't be long before the sign'll go down too.

I don't know if the museum has sufficient storage space to hold something as large as La Contessa's sign. But give them a call and ask. They are open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday afternoons. Ask for Evelyn.

maybe instead of some cheesy mural, a building in Davis could offer up its side for the old signs of Davis. That would actually be neat.

where was Woolworths? For that matter where was the Supreme Deli.

And apropos of nothing it really sucks that one can't get decent bread (or bagels or muffins) in the Sq. Carberries' quality was uneven but at least it was a walk away.

The Supreme Deli was where Diva is now.

Woolworths was in a couple different places. The last incarnation was "Woolworth Express", somewhere on the north side of Elm Street, but I can't remember exactly where.

Mr. Crepe now sells muffins.
