Food Coop?

Anyone know if there is a food coop in or around Somerville/Cambridge? Or have those gone the way fill_in_the_blank (I was going to say rent control but we don't need to rehearse that play again). I know about Harvest in CS. I'm looking to do things like buy corn meal that isn't in a box. (and avoid: the zombie zone of Shaws; the existential angst of Whole Foods; the priceiness and poor produce of Pemberton's).

Not that there is anything wrong with those places...

Market Basket: brings the excitement with massive crowds, all the time; totally down-to-earth and straightforward; best price and best produce.

no bulk cornmeal tho.

Exactly what I was going to say. Market Basket for the win.

I have to say that I'm also a fan of Market Basket for produce. For bulk foods, though, I have pretty much shopped exclusively at Harvest or Whole Foods; both get my vote (although Whole Foods makes me cry a little when I see how much the bill is)

Are you suggesting that MB was maliciously raising the bids in an attempt to prevent state-subsidized housing from moving in? If not, I don't see what the problem is. There was a bidding process and the state lost. Hopefully it was able to find a more affordable location for the subsidized housing.

If you want actual dirt on MB, I've heard several semi-confirmed rumors that they have poor labor practices in their stores.

Harvest is the former Cambridge Food Coop (and also the former Boston Food Coop that used to be in Allston)

Somerville Food Coop

I belong to the Somerville Food Coop. It is a small, preorder food coop that orders directly from Northeast Food Coop. We order monthly and, once you join, you will be expected to work about once every three months. Work consists of meeting the truck and helping to unload the food and separating the food intor individual orders. Work takes about 90-120 minutes. We do our breakdown/pick-up in a house located near City Hall. Check out the web site and email for additional information.

I'm not sure what's wrong with Harvest, since you say you know about it...they will happily sell you corn meal not in a box, and many other things not in a box as well. Their produce is good. They are a little pricey, I suppose, but not Whole Foods-level. I've been very happy with them.

Though the Somerville Food Coop is nice to know about, too!

As a young professional, let me say that the Shaws in porter is really just about the awsomest place ever. Great for the late night munchies (no more Golden Light thank god) and good variety. The $5 premade meals are frickin fantastic as well.

As a young professional with a good sense of what foods are tasty and what prices are good, let me say that the Shaws in Porter has neither good-quality fresh foods nor good prices.

I'm quite fond of the Harvest food co-op. They have all sorts of things you can't get elsewhere (millet, anyone? Spelt?), well-stocked bulk spices, wholesome prepared foods... I've been a member for years.
