The parking situation there is pretty pesky. I've been meaning to bring my sewing machine over for service, but the hassle of parking puts me off. I took a day off work to bring a pile of stuff over to the good will in the middle of the day, but even then it was nearly impossible to park and unload stuff.
Oh, I know. Believe me. That's why I'm so grateful for my spot in the VFW lot. I don't really see how upping the limit to three hours is going to do anything to make it better...but really, I don't see how it can make it worse either. That was my point.
Next time you need to go into the square, let me know and I'll sneak my pass to you. : D
I suspect the biggest benefit to people who want to go to the Theater. Personally, unless I am trying to carry something heavy, I wouldn't even try to park in the Square. I have a resident permit, so I park at a friend's house and walk in for things like going to the theater, grabbing food before visiting a friend, etc. The bad driver/biker/pedestrian behavior in the square does put me off from shopping there as much as a I might otherwise, and so I find myself going more to Arlington & Medford. (Though it's not nearly as bad as Harvard Square!)
Harvard Square is a nightmare. Davis is far more a nightmare now than it was 10 or 15 years ago...or really, even 8 years ago. But, I think I'm so used to driving through the square now that it doesn't bother me as much as it used to.
If I do have those moments of dread at going through the square to get to the VFW and I know I won't be long or that it's later and I won't need to keep dashing to feed the meteres, I'll park in the lot by the T - but that's relatively rare.
