And adding to everyone else's comments -- as someone who didn't own a car for the first 5 or so years I lived here, including a year of bicycle commuting to Newton (which I still do sometimes) -- even if one doesn't need a car, it gets a heck of a lot harder when there are two, one of whom is a baby. I could get her everywhere by foot and bus and T and bike, but it's a lot more logistical horror, and then there's the weather. Sure, I've biked seven miles through ice pellets, but I'm not doing that with an infant.
