I meant to add that I do actually address the affect/effect thing on my grammar website (http://www.englishchick.com/grammar/), under "confused words" -- but having read your blog post, I must admit that it probably won't help, since you've already read up on the difference. Unfortunately there isn't a good mnemonic for this one that I know of. You could try remembering that Affect is an Action word (i.e., a verb) whereas Effect is an Entity (i.e., a noun), but that's fairly awkward.
My sympathies on the lack of sleep. I have two small kids, so I know how that is. ;)
Not for those of us who are social psychologists. I've spent an inordinate amount of time considering the difference between affect and cognition. And how an experimenter can effect a change in one by manipulating the other.
