FYI: As of 3:00 today (Saturday, Decemeber 6th) the City of Somerville has declared a snow emergency.

What does this mean to me?
Your car must be parked on the ODD SIDE of the street by 3:00 p.m. today.

How did you know that?
The side of the street on which you are allowed to park depends on the year. Odd years = odd side of the street and even years = even side of the street.

So, 2003 = odd year = odd side of the street.

If you ever suspect there might a snow emergency, call City Hall at:
(617) 625-6600
If there is a snow emergency, there will be a message to tell you so.

This has been a public service announcement from:

I just walked to Davis from Ball Sq. It was great exercise!

Try walking from Davis to Town Hall. That mid-grade slope after Centre St. will get your heart pumping. For the really adventurous, walk up School St., either side. I do it every morning in the good weather, but with the snow it damn near killed me.

I used to live on School Street about a quarter mile away from Broadway. I didn't own a car, so every workday morning for a year, I walked up the hill past the Somerville High School (opposite direction to Broadway) to catch the bus to Davis Square, and down it in the evening. Good exercise!

So, 2003 = odd year = odd side of the street.

Does this mean that as of 1 January 2004 everyone switches to the even side of the street?

In Medford, the rule is this: Odd-even rules take effect on 1 November every year. If November is in an odd-numbered year, parking is on the odd side of the street. If November is in an even-numbered year, parking is on the even side of the street. I suspect the rules in Somerville are similar.

I like the idea of Odd/Even rules taking effect during declared snow emergencies only. This is much more reasonable than Medford's all-day every day between November and April rule.

This winter, Medford residents park on the odd side of the street because November falls in an odd-numbered year, 2003. We will continue to park on the odd side of the street until the end of April 2004. Beginning in November 2004, we will park on the even side of the street until the end of April 2005.

I got nailed by this 3 years ago. They called a snow emergency when I was at work and didn't even know about it until I was brushing off my car later that night and discovered the $50 ticket. I have no clue what it is now and was (may be not so) surprised to hear that they're towing as well..

Thanks! Though I wonder, with living on a street with parking never allowed on the even side, what will happen next year? No parking on our street at all? Or will it not matter, since they'll have plenty of room for plowing anyway?

THANK YOU for posting this. (Looks like I lucked out with where I happened to park yesterday -- hurrah.)

yo, i've lived here 12 years and believe me, during a snow emergency you can't park on the EVEN side of residential streets! This DOES NOT CHANGE when the year changes. That info about odd year/even year is not true. A snow emergency in January will have the same rules as that of today. thanks and please, believe me

Thanks for the report. You might want to get back to whoever told you about the supposed odd-even alternation and tell them that they're spreading inaccurate information. During snow emergencies, you park on the odd side of the street.

There's currently a scrolling banner on the City of Somerville website, http://www.ci.somerville.ma.us, reporting the snow emergency. This would be another place to check for current information.

I appologize in advance for my ignorance, but what the hell is an odd side of the street?
