I just had something extremely weird happen and I wanted to pass it along..

I am home (russell road) doing laundry and all of a sudden my two dogs are going crazy growling and such. I look towards the front door and I see a man in a bright orange sweatshirt and green and white red sox hat jump and sit in my porch swing I have in front of the window. I get paranoid at this point and call my fiance to ask what do i do (ive never been in this type of situation and I was scared because honestly who sits on someone swing!?) and while telling him whats going on i look out my dining room window and I see a guy in my driveway wearing the same outfit waving his hands around to the guy on the porch. All of a sudden the guy on the porch runs down our steps and jumps into a gold colored SUV.

I then decided to call the somerville police dept and ask what should I do in this type of situation and they said to call 911. They were more than likely looking to rob the house and when the dogs jumped growling at the front door it scared them off and the other guy was probably looking in the driveway to see if there was another way in our house. What I find weird is that we have 2 parked cars in the driveway you would think they thought we were home.

The police are keeping an eye out especially since they werent in any type of delivery truck lost or anything like that. So just be more aware everyone!

UPDATE 2: The cops pulled over two cars they thought might be them but nope. Turns out a neighbor sa wa weird guy lurking this morning and told him to beat it. Weirdness all around.

UPDATE: They came back!!! They made it halfway up the steps and I think they saw me in the window (where my computer is) and they took off. The cops came this time and checked everything out but its so weird they came back. The cops are doing detail around the corner from my hous eso he said he will periodically walk back over here :(

Scary! I would have freaked out. At least you had the dogs there.

Weird. I would have gone outside and asked what he wanted.

in traditional new england dialect, "excuse me, can i help you?" translates to "get the hell off my property."

Heh. Here I thought it was sales-lingo for "What the hell are you doing/what the hell do you want?" I used it a lot in retail. But yeah, people around here do understand what's meant by the tone, usually.

why would people in bright orange sweatshirts rob a house? i mean, wouldn't you go for something a bit more subtle in tone (black, say?)

Yeah, but bright orange only says 'hunter' or 'prison' to me... =)

Jeez. The question makes me think maybe they were trying to pass themselves off as workmen of some sort.

A while back someone posted here about people who had a story like that but were actually looking for places to break into.

If you saw people in uniforms going in and out of your neighbor's house you'd probably think they were work men who were allowed to be there.

All conjecture but still...

Scary. Scary.

That's unnerving! Hopefully they won't come back, or the cops will nab them.

Thanks for the notice. I passed this along to my roommates, and people I know in the area, to keep an eye out.

thanks for posting!

the front door of my building has been wonky lately, and doesn't fully close and lock unless it is slammed. i came home today to find it wide open, but for some reason still contemplated whether or not it was appropriate to leave a note for everyone to close the damn door when they leave. your post definitely made me decide to write the note.

I'll take this opportunity to remind everyone:

Now that the weather is nice, a lot of us are leaving windows open. Be sure NOT to leave windows open when you're away from home, if they are on the first floor or they lead to a fire escape.

That's so bizarre! A while ago my roommate reported that someone actually came to our door saying he was from the cable company and he needed to come look at the wiring or something. She was like, "Sorry, we didn't call the cable company, you have the wrong apartment" and he got pushy and kept saying to let him in. She didn't, and she was freaked out enough by it that I think her instincts were good. You can't be too careful... the previous tenants of our apartment had a break-in last year.

Yeah seriously... that's really unsettling... but trust your instincts!! Thank goodness you're ok and thank you for posting- now we'll all keep a look out, maybe they'll get caught.
(I dunno what I'd do without my dog... a second set of ears and eyes is always a help).

If you have a computer visible from your window, they might be back until they get the computer. This happened at our house last spring. The guys came back repeatedly to get a laptop visible in the front window of our tenants apt. on the first floor.

One day I noticed a hole in the screen on our front porch. I thought a delivery person had done it. Two days later there was a hole on the other side of the same screen. I didn't realize it at the time, but someone wanted the laptop in the window and was trying to get the window opened.

They kept coming back, and eventually pushed in an air conditioner to gain access. They grabbed the laptop by the front window, but ran (I assume) right by another laptop in their haste to get the one they knew about.

The police told us never to leave anything valuable visible in a window. They also said that pushing in air conditioners to gain access if very common, so make sure they are secured and cannot be pushed in (or remove the AC when you are not home).
