What are you looking for? For dish cloth cotton and acrylics, I go to Michaels and AC Moore.
For nicer yarn...well, there's lots of options! Sparks in Davis has a small but nice collection. The Knitting Room in Arlington (right near the Capitol Theater) is very nice AND they are consistently nice and friendly, but they have a smaller stock. Windsor Button downtown has a great selection, service is hit or miss. Woolcott and Co. in Harvard Square also has a good selection, and the service is also QUITE hit or miss. I haven't been to Mind's Eye yarn in Porter, but apparently they have really good sock yarn. There's a cute little store in Melrose called Sit and Knit, they have a good "baby" yarn selection, and I also thought the store in Lexington (sorry, can't remember the name, I am sure someone here might know) was okay, though they were sort of standoffish. The Knittin' Kitten on the Cambridge/Belmont line is okay too, though they had an attitude about Magic Loop.
I have also had excellent experiences with Yarnmarket (www.yarnmarket.com) and Webs (www.yarn.com). Or you could just GO to Webs, :), but it's in Northampton so that might be further than you want to go!
I think there's a supply store in Coolidge Corner in Brookline (not Davis Square that I know of), though I remember little else and can guarantee this will be one of the less helpful comments on this thread.
There is one in Davis -- Spark Crafts (http://www.sparkcrafts.com/) -- which is a cool place, but relatively limited selection of yarn. I don't know of one in Coolidge Corner, unless it's new (though there are several stores in Coolidge Corner that were there all the time that I just never discovered when I was living there, so I could be wrong!) -- but are you thinking of the one in Brookline Village, right off the T stop? It's a nice place, but not worth the hike for me. kalliejenn2, I've been meaning to check out The Knitting Room in Arlington, if you wanna go some time.
Oh, and now I want to check out Mind's Eye Yarn (http://www.mindseyeyarns.com/), too, based on the recs above. There's one on Newbury Street of course, but it's annoyingly expensive and I didn't get good service. And while I don't like the commute, I admit that A Good Yarn (http://www.agoodyarn.biz/) in Brookline had the biggest selection I've seen so far, and very friendly service.
I just went there (Mind's Eye) for the first time tonight! It's quite small, and as much about spinning as it is about yarn and knitting. The woman who owns it is so nice, and I got some very pretty sock yarn in my favorite colors! She seems to sell mostly Cascade yarns.
It does -it's still got the crafty and wedding-y stuff, but it's got a BIG yarn selection now. Apparently they started with more craft-store yarn and got hooked, and now have a big selection of really nice yarns! I sent them a complaint letter about some rude service I got, and they sent me a nice response.
Word. They have quite a lot of nice stuff in the yarn section. I tend to do most of my yarn shopping there because it's cheaper than Woolcott & Co. in Harvard Square, and not so overcrowded--it's easier to find stuff.
Woolcott is great for luxury yarns, though. And Lucy at Mind's Eye in Porter is awesome.
The folks at the Knitting Room in Arlington are very nice and pretty close to the bike path that runs through Davis. (Turn right when it crosses Lake St and it's about 2 blocks, just before you get to Mass Ave.)
I did not know Mind's Eye had a lot of sock yarn. I will have to check them out. They were closed the last time I passed by, unfortunately.
