Zipcar

Being so close to the T and Shaws I'm thinking of selling my ghetto hooptie and getting into zipcar. I very occaisionally drive to NH to visit my parents, and sometimes go to like home depot and things like that, but no more daily commute, so I figured I might try and save some cash. Any zipsters on this board who can offer opinions, or referal bonus codes?

$336 sounds outrageous! I rented a car for a week last summer on vacation in California for much less than that. Is it the insurance that makese is so expensive?

I suddenly find myself feeling sorry for having said anything! It's the extra miles - 125 a day are included, but you're charged per mile over that.

If you don't have a car, you don't have car insurance.

Insurance, per day, at the most basic level for rental cars is about 20$/day. More if you want more than collision insurance. And more if you're under 25 (and can rent at all).

and this included gas. Which, at 650 miles is probably 60$, at today's rates (20 gallions @ 30 miles/gallon and 3$/gallon).

So, the cost of the car itself is closer to 270$.
Still REALLY expensive for a 2 day rental, at 135$/day. But if you include insurance in that, its closer to 80-100$/day plus insurance.

(and, IIRC, car rentals are 24 hour slots, but insurance is by calendar days.)

I had thought that a rental would be cheaper, but when I rented a car to drive down to a wedding in January, I found I was wrong. I rented from Enterprise, and had to get a mid-size car because I was carrying several people. I don't remember how much it came to in the end, but by the time I had paid for the car, insurance and gas, I realised I would have saved a few bucks by using Zipcar instead.

Same thing happened to me, even using Enterprise's weekend special. By the time I factored in insurance and fuel, I would have actually paid less using Zipcar and I could have picked it up a block from my house without doing any paperwork.
