Free Thursday Backyard Movies at Boloco

The Thursday Night backyard movie that was to be held in the alley of Willoughby and Baltic has been moved to the parking lot of Boloco (next door) on Elm Street in Davis Square. This week's movie is scheduled to be a collection by the Brother's Quay. 

Come to Willoughby and Baltic from 6-8 pm for the opening reception of the latest show of prints collected by Thomas Prince. Meet our new curator and find out about our exciting plans for the summer, including outdoor music, puppets, films, art exhibits, and much more. We also have coupons for deals from Boloco, Benjapon's and Subway. Head over to Boloco at sundown (around 8:30) for the movies.

You are welcome to bring your own lawn chairs, etc. We will have some seating available, but you might want to bring your own. Boloco will be open until at least 10 o'clock  if you are hungry.

We are always on the lookout for musical acts to perform before the movies on Thursdays, so if you are interested, drop us an email at infoATwilloughbybalticDOTcom.

We will announce next week's movie at the conclusion of this week's film.

just fyi-wise, that would NOT be the Willoughby St. that connects Central and Sycamore St. - this is between Davis and Porter Squares, off of Elm. Yup.
Weird that Somerville has two Willoughby's.

Willoughby and Baltic is the name of the art studio. There are no streets with these names near it. The address is 195 Elm Street, but they're tucked into a back alley near Boloco.

Yes, Willoughby and Baltic is located at 195g Elm Street in Davis Square. The "g" used to stand for "garage", but now stands for "gallery".

Willoughby and Baltic has nothing to do with either Willoughby or Baltic Streets. In fact, the gallery is down what the businesses out front call "artists alley". Follow the polka-dotted path that is between Benjapon's and Subway.

May I ask the derivation of the name? Being ever Austen-mad, and thus fond of the name "Willoughby" whether or not the character is a cad, and being half-Estonian, my heart warmed to the name even before I enjoyed the puppet show and chocolate 'n songfest many months back.

It's so sad. I couldn't have confused potential patrons more if I had tried. First I hide the gallery down an alley, then I have the name of two streets that the gallery isn't even near as the gallery name.

The story of how the gallery got it's name is a little more boring than you would think. Willoughby and Baltic was named after a fish I had named Baltic (after my Lithuanian roots) and a dog I was thinking of adopting named Willoughby (an Old English Sheepdog whose name fit him very well).

When my studio was in the North End the name was fine, but here in Somerville it's a recipe for confusion. A few people have asked me if Willoughby was named after the Twilight Zone episode. I love all the different images the name "Willoughby" conjures up.

The puppet and chocolate show with Kirk and Lucy was really fun! I hope Brian Rust can bring in more delicious chocolate sometime.

If you had named it Mediterranean and Baltic, that would have brought up a whole different set of associations. (Though this part of Somerville is hardly a low-rent district anymore.)
