Myself and one other apartment in my building on Dover St were robbed yesterday. The police said their has been a rash of robberies, they stole electronics/computer, personal information, bottles of wine (also stole wine in the other robberies, but left behind hard alchol - why they wanted 5 bottle of 2 buck chuck is beyond me). Of course I'm freaking out. So please be careful, this happened in the middle of the work day, other units in the building weren't touched, but the robbers used a lot of force to get in, the police think it was junkies, too high to care about how much noise they made, but they did seem to have tools.

If you saw anything let me know.

Also, if you know of any 1 bedrooms coming up in the area, I'd love to hear it. My lease is up Sept 1 and I'm considering a move. Looking for a one bedroom with parking in our area.

Sorry to hear that.
May I just clarify this? If you were robbed, you were there and suffered the threat of violence against your person. Was this the case or were you the victim of burglary?

i hear you. i'm so sorry to hear that you were burglarized. that's happened to me twice before (not in davis) so i can relate. there were several break-ins in my building last year at chester & orchard, so it's really helpful to know if there's another rash of break-ins now. the burglaries sounded similar to yours -- they made a big mess, stole jars of change and stuff like that, in the middle of the day. it definitely sounds like junkies :( i know it's too late for this now, but we got renter's insurance after it happened, and it's worth looking into for your next place.

I'd like to know the same things, actually, and for the same exact reasons. Woman living alone on the first floor. I also live on Dover St... would you mind emailing me at dewess at gmail • com ? I also understand if you don't want to share info with a stranger... maybe we can make a women living alone on the first floor meetup group at Diesel.

I'm only half kidding about that last part - I've heard most break-ins do occur in the middle of the day when everyone is at work, it's the easiest time to do it. Evidenced by your list above. I work from home sometimes, in fact I was home yesterday (but saw/heard nothing suspicious, sorry) but now I am thinking I will connect with DARBI or some kind of neighborhood watch and keep a better eye on my neighbor's places.

> I don't want to post the specifics, I hate when shows etc show people how to break in places

Well, the thieves already know how. It's your choice, but there's many more people who might add to their security precautions based on this.

P.S. You are aware that a Davis watch group is starting up, right?

a reminder to everyone: if you have a window that opens out to a fire escape, be sure to close and lock it when you are not home.

Another easy way to improve home security: replace your strike plates with box strikes. These are the little metal plates in the door frame that deadbolts latch into, and they're the part that usually breaks when a burglar kicks in a door (according to a consumer reports article from 2005). It's about a $10 upgrade, and is easy to do with a screwdriver on most doorways.
