Shino Express Sushi

A sign on the window of the former La Contessa says that the new occupant will be Shino Express Sushi.

Their web site says they are now at 144 Newbury Street in Boston. I don't know if they are moving that restaurant to Davis Square, or opening a second location here. If any of you have eaten there, feel free to comment.

I've eaten at Shino Express and at what I think is a related place on Beacon St. and both are pretty good-- they are perhaps closer to the Japanese idea of a sushi place, which is to say that they rely on quick turnover and moderate prices to move fish quickly. Not fancy but quick and delicious.

I'm sad La Contessa is gone, but since I went there less than once a year I don't think I'll miss it.

shino is glorious. it's magical because it's on newbury but fast, reasonably priced, really high quality and a very relaxed atmosphere. I liked one of their chefs a lot because he would always be handy very odd looking pieces of fish to kids or first time sushi eaters sitting at the counter.
Also my friend who doesnt like sushi very much but loves japanese food otherwise thought that their beef bowl was one of the best beef bowls in that price range he's ever had. I particularly liked their crispy eel roll which had a delicious sauce on top and tempura flakes. I'm really hungry right now, can you tell?

I also noticed that China Sun is now going to be Taipei Tokyo. Not sure if that is a Sushi place or not.

There are dozens and dozens of restaurants named "Taipei Tokyo" all over the country. I have no idea if they are connected, or just making use of a popular name. The one I'm familiar with had sushi (Northampton, MA).

I know the one in Rockville, MD is not related to the one in Northampton - which is a shame, the Rockville one had first rate spicy beef noodle soup.

Either way I won't miss the China Sun.

Shino Express is the best value sushi in the city. They're known for it too, so they do a lot of volume and their fish is fresh.
