After 15 satisfying years, I'm looking to part with my 92 Toyota. Does anyone know of know of worthwhile local charities/organizations that are looking for car donations?

i've seen ads on tv the past few weeks about donating cars to the special olympics. don't know anything beyond that, though.

I think NPR/WBUR takes car donations.

I donated a car to AIDS Action Committee and they were great! Everything went smoothly.

The American Kidney Foundation accepts cars...they pick it up for you, no effort on your part.

Massachusetts Adoption Resources Exchange (http://mareinc.org/documents/cardonation.html) will tow your dead car away free of charge (they took my 1991 Ford), and the proceeds help place foster children in permanent homes. Go to their website, or talk to Marcia at 617-542-3678 for the complete details.

NPR/WBUR mentions accepting them all the time. I donated mine to the American Cancer Society back in 2000, they picked it up and everything (it certainly wasn't driving anywhere).

Don't know if you already know this, but I was disappointed to find that the value of my donation, as itemized, was less than the standard deduction I would have taken anyway. I, however, have always been ignorant of how taxes work. YMMV. :)

I think you should donate it to the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center. They have a link from their website: www.barcc.org. It's local, and amazing.

If your car is still in decent shape (i.e. drivable), you ought to check out Good News Garage (http://www.goodnewsgarage.org) who will fix it and give it to a family in need instead of auctioning it off for cash as almost all the other places do. I'm not sure what fraction of the auction cash actually goes to the charity in question, but if a needy family is driving your car, you can be sure the whole thing is appreciated.
