So I called Nstar and they told me a car hit a major line and they didnt know how long it would be down for. Ten mins later the power came on...I took a look around here but I didnt see any accident. Did any of you or do you guys know the "real reason" such as Nstar sucks lol. Our power keeps flashing off and on too which is strange.

There was a nstar truck on Curtis St near Teele, but I'm not sure if he was fixing anything or just checking stuff. I wasn't near it when the power went on/off/on.

The weird thing was that even though all my networking stuff was on UPS, RCN apparently wasn't. I seem to remember last power outage still having internet access, so I wonder what happened with RCN. It's working now though :)

There were sirens going down Holland St. shortly after the power went off. The story they gave you sounds plausible enough to me. I mean, sucks that the infrastructure is that vulnerable, but I don't find that surprising at all.

That said, demand is certainly at its highest when the temperature is like it is tonight, and maybe overloaded systems are a factor too. (Perhaps they could have coped with the major line being down on a cooler night.)

FWIW, The power didn't flash at all here (Davis Square side of Teele) -- just went off and then back on again after a while. Flashing on and off isn't particularly strange either when they're trying to repair/route-around a problem.

Anyway, sounds like you're from somewhere where this doesn't happen all the time. :)

I'm not seeing any of this here on Day Street. A few summers ago, this kind of weather would regularly cause transformer explosions and blackouts on Orchard St.

I just had a flicker over on Highland Rd. It was off for under a minute.

I was coming home around 9 and noticed the lights were off starting just about at the fire station in Teele Square and continued off up Curtis just about up to the Medford line. There was an NStar truck with a guy in the box that takes him up to the top of the poles. The time my clock stopped was at about 8:40 I think. The electricity came on again at 9:22 and then went off again for less than a minute sometime between 9:30 and 10:00.

We lost power repeatedly last night, for at least 5 half-hour-or-so outages. I was going to post here yelling at people to suck it up and turn their air conditioners off, but if they weren't near peak, I wonder what was going on?

I've been losing power off and on for the past several days. I suspect the real reason is the heat wave -- everyone's who's got A/C is cranking it and Nstar can't keep up.

ditto to all the last comments. i saw this earlier in the evening and hadn't lost power, so i was thinking we were lucky. but we had a five minute or so flicker around 10:00 (on pearson) and then the power was on and off (but mostly off) all night until like 6:00 am. that wasn't the best nights sleep, to say the least.

Just because the entire power grid isn't at peak load doesn't mean neighborhood lines and transformers won't have problems.

Power on Endicott

On Endicott just outside of Teele we lost power from *about* 15 'til 9:00 (as I was walking up Holland all the streetlights went out and things got momentarily creepy) until about 20 past 9:00, then again about 10 minutes later for about 30 seconds. That was all she wrote for flashes, though, as the alarm clock this morning gave me an accurate reflection of the time, indicating it had been powered all through the night.

I lit a ton of candles, opened & closed the fridge as quickly as possible to grab a beer, powered up the laptop CD player, and did me some very romantic dishes by candlelight...

I'm on Simpson and our power was out for a full two hours. My husband and I gave up on sitting in the backyard and went to JP Licks. While walking down Holland, we noticed that there was an NStar truck on the corner of Holland and Buena Vista, and that the pole on that corner looked really bent (about 20 degrees from vertical), so that could be where they got the story from. Teele and the hill on the other side of Broadway got power back a lot sooner than the triangle from Orleans to Paulina...

I knew someone here would know what happened last night! Thanks for the info. :) On Burnham Street (off B'way by Powderhouse) our power was out from roughly 8:45 - 10:00 pm, putting an end to doing homework for the night. Aw, shucks. ;)

We had Brownouts in Arlington

Low power voltage dips - did anyone else hear their ac units working hard or other appliances? It also fried our cheap battery UPS
