[identity profile] tomscholfield.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] davis_square
On the evening of July 26 as I was walking down Highland Ave toward the Square I found a Citizens Bank Card, a Credit Card and a San Francisco Drivers License on the sidewalk. Right across from where Alex Pizza and Magpie used to be.

Shoot me an e-mail if you have lost these and I can get them back to you.

And Im sure that anyone missing a San Francisco license checks the Davis Square community often.

Or even knowns about it.

For the LOVE OF GOD, If you want to be a good simaritan, would you people just turn these things into the police like youre supposed to???

To be fair, it could quite easily be a college student's license in this town, and a college student living here for the time being may well read this community. But I agree, turning it over to the police with a notice here and at the spot where you found it that you did so is the safest bet.

Clearly [livejournal.com profile] tomscholfield made the right choice by posting here first. I agree that turning found items into the police after a day of no response would be the right course of action. Really though, acting like he's an idiot isn't a very effective way of encouraging future Good Samaritan behavior. There's a way to suggest that other action would be more effective without shouting FOR THE LOVE OF GOD at someone who's merely trying to be helpful - and succeeding.

Yup. And as you see below, the owner of the cards was reading this community!! :-)

Exactly! I've been here a couple of months actually, and it seems to me that a TON of people read this journal. Obviously, I'm glad Tom posted this info and I agree that we don't need to attack people for trying to help others using a variety of channels.

Just because he got lucky this time doesnt make it the right choice.

It doesn't really matter where the license was from. It was found in Davis.

I think it's worth a shot.

We disagree. That's cool.

But it worked this time, so we can gloat.

Posting here instead of contacting the police would not be the right choice. Contacting the police instead of posting here would also be suboptimal. Doing both was a better choice, both theoretically (because it doubled the number of ways for the owner to be reunited with her cards) and in practice (because it did, in fact, get the cards to their rightful owner).

Being a smug, sanctimonious asshole is rarely the right choice. It was probably not the right choice here. This is a great community and people help each other out with suggestions, return of cards etc. People are a lot less likely to do that for someone who is condescending to those who are trying to help.

But perhaps you are not intending to ever need help or support from anyone in this forum, in which case, proceed as you have been. If nothing else it gives the rest of us something to bond over.

I could accuse you of being condescending and patronizing, but Im sure youre not, and Im just misreading your intent. Such is the nature of type vs. the spoken word.

After all, who would read a couple lines in a post and automatically jump to the conclusion they were being smug and not, maybe, using hyperbole?

But perhaps you are a patronizing prat after all, and you dont deserve the benefit of the doubt. Im going to give it to you anyway, because this is a great community and yadda yadda...

Oh sweetie. I was being condescending and patronizing. I thought that would be clear. Note the post above says:

Being a smug, sanctimonious asshole is rarely the right choice.

Note the emphasized word rarely, which implies that it is sometimes the right choice. It's probably not the right choice if you're responding to someone who's going out of their way to do something kind for an unknown person that they've never met. It probably is the right choice if you can get the type of amusing pouty response you give above.

Hope this helps.

As long as I'm dishing out much needed help: "simaritan" [sic] is spelled Samaritan, and is generally capitalized. And "youre" [sic], being a contraction, traditionally contains an apostrophe.

Of course, Murphy's law of posting guarantees that there will be at least on glaring spelling or grammar error in this comment, which will allow you the opportunity to all-too-predictably respond to this.

I'm glad you did, too. (But I do wonder if someone who just moved here from SF would know "where Alex Pizza and Magpie used to be")

I actually moved here just before the Alex Pizza/Magpie turnover, so I did know the location. :)

It doesn't matter if they know where it is or not.

I cannot believe more than one person lost an SF license anywhere in David this week.

Never mind! I figured out how to email him. I'm new to livejournal (and to Davis Square, thus the California license).

San Francisco drivers license? What, does the City and County of San Francisco have its own DMV now and is issuing its own licenses?

When I lived there, I had a California Drivers License.

MA licenses have the driver's street address, and I presume the same is true for CA licenses.

Yay for [livejournal.com profile] tomscholfield and boo for everyone who dissed him for giving LJ a try first. Because "first" does not equal "only".
