Hi Folks,
Anybody have news/info on "Taipei Tokyo"? There is a sign for it, where the Sun....something Chinese restaurant used to be, on Holland across from the theater, next to Johnny D's.
I hope it's more Taiwanese and less Japanese. But will happily take both.
Thanks!
(sorry if this has been discussed already)

It was China Sun, across from the Somerville Theatre, but I don't know anything more. It's still under construction, no?

For some reason I thought the construction was just a renovation project and it was still going to be the same operators, but now that the sign has gone up with the new name I am not so sure. But, that is pure speculation based solely on reading the signs. :)

There's 2 other "Taipei Tokyo"s that I know of - one in Manchester NH and one in Northampton MA. They're both really really good. I'm very excited if we're getting one down here!

Yup, I've been to the Northampton one many many times. I'm very happy they are arriving. I would say they're more Japanese, though.

I think everyone is under the impression that China Sun was just having renovations and would be back because they had a sign up that said just that.

But I've heard great things about Taipei Tokyo in Noho. So this could be exciting :-)

Lots of places put up "renovating" signs when they're not sure if they'll be able to reopen - due to financial or personal crises or rent issues or whatever. That way they leave their PR options open if they are able to stay afloat. If that's what happened to China Sun that's sad, cos the people who ran it were nice, but TT sounds fantastic too. And it could always be the China Sun people taking on a TT franchise for all we know, though I kinda doubt it.

I just spoke to James, whose family has taken over the space. They are renovating now and hope to be open in a couple of weeks. He said that the Northampton Taipei/Tokyo are cousins, and that his family owns this one. They'll be serving sushi, and he's been installing some of the decorative woodwork by hand.

I'm happy to see a sushi place in Davis! I'm not much for the powderhouse place, and it's closer than Porter Exchange. (I haven't tried Kaya, though.) Although I'm also sad to see the lovely, lovely family who owned China Sun have left. I liked them a lot and wish I could wish them well.
